Universal and Gore Verbinski are going into "Bioshock."
Studio has signed a deal to turn last year's hit videogame, which won numerous awards and sold more than 2 million units worldwide, into a film.
The "Pirates of the Caribbean" helmer is attached to direct and produce. "Aviator" scribe John Logan is in talks to pen the screenplay.
"Bioshock" publisher Take-Two Interactive is getting a multimillion-dollar advance against gross points on the pic. It's believed to be the biggest videogame-to-movie deal since 2005, when U and Fox signed onto the since aborted "Halo" pic, for which Microsoft got $5 million against 10%.
Take-Two executive chairman Strauss Zelnick said the "state of the art" deal is structured so that "Bioshock" won't end up in turnaround like "Halo," which is back with Microsoft.
not surprising in the least, though i dunno how excited i am about this... i can see it going either way... the cheapo easy popcorn flick, or a great thriller with high production values... either way im pretty meh about it at the moment.

believe me Hollywood will fuck up this one really good , remember Hitman or the Pg-13 version of MaxPain that will be soon in theaters ....
but remember silent hill... (yeah... i wish i had more than 1 example to give... ) - whether or not people liked it or not, or how 'true' it was to the game, THAT movie had awesome production values from a director who loved the source material... yeah its unlikely it'll happen again, but you never know
This could turn out to be an awesome movie if it were to be done right. But since it's hollywood they won't see the potential. God how I would love to see Andrew Ryan as a real character.
Is this supposed to be animated like beowulf was or no?
Cause if they go overboard with the animation, its gunna suck for me. I'd rather a buncha tech guys build the monster's and suits and stuff than seeing cgi all over the place.
That's because most games that have been translated to movies had crappy storylines to begin with. Games like Resident Evil or Tomb Raider had a completely retarded storyline, even on a videogame level. Bioshock had a great storyline, so I'm looking forward to it.
Netflix is partnering with video game holding company Take-Two Interactive and its game publisher subsidiary, 2K, to produce a film based on their renowned video game franchise BioShock.
Over the years, multiple attempts at adapting the franchise for film have been made, all at Universal. Gore Verbinski signed on to direct a BioShock film, from a script by John Logan, in 2008, but that project was shelved due to budget concerns, with Verbinski later in talks to produce an adaptation from director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. That iteration was likewise canceled in 2013, when the filmmakers failed to reach an agreement with the studio with regard to the film’s budget and intended rating.
2K will produce the upcoming adaptation with Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment.
“Netflix is among the best and most forward-thinking storytellers in all of entertainment today. We are thrilled that they share our vision and commitment to the BioShock franchise, which is beloved by millions of fans around the world,” said Take-Two Interactive’s Chairman and CEO, Strauss Zelnick. “2K’s Cloud Chamber studio is deep in active development on the next iteration of the series, and coupled with our partnership with Netflix, we remain highly confident that BioShock will continue to captivate and engage audiences like never before.”
Completely forgot gore was attached to this.
Heart remains broken.
But his new movie sounds interesting. Can't wait.
This is instaskip. They're gonna keep it faithful like they did cowboy Bebop.
I will not be able to handle pseudo intellectual cringe of this level. +1 to the skip list.
