Hi all,
I plan to buy a new GC. For my budget, I can get either a XFX 8800 GTX or a MSI 8800 GTS 512Mo OC.

What would you recommend? And why?

You should add [/sarcasm] to your post, or someone might actually thing that abomination is actually worth something.

Haha yeap, had a lil chat with some hardware vendor reps at a trade show and while they wouldn't give much of anything away about next generation even they admitted 9800gx2 was a stopgap product for a very niche(read spoiled brats with more money than brains) market put out while nvidia preps their next killer architecture.

9800GX2... lol
-out of budget
-absolutely worthless (except if you plan to buy me one Razz)

So no real suggestion for now except the classical (but always true) "Save your money for later, something good may come out".

I am really tempted by the 8800GTX but I may come a bit late. On the other side, the price is now very attractive...

I would get the new GTS like the one you selected. I mean it costs a little more but it's the best performer from what i've seen.

Pretty sure the new GTS pwns all

http://www.techspot.com/review/79-geforce-8800-gts-512/page4.html

Damn nvidia for making it so confusing.

With the 640MB/320MB the GT is better but the 512MB is the new one that rocks.

bullshit Wink A lot of new games I can't max out the details and I only run @ 1280x1024 which is hardly a high res compared to 1650x1050 widescreen like most people have now...

The 640/320 are the old GTS cards. GT is 512.

GTX pwns both GT and GTS (new and old).

Only at certain resolutions does the gtx pwn both. Also, if you look anywhere the GTS has a 512 mb model now which is really nice -- better then the gt by a bit. Just check those benches.

In some cases 35 frames. I would say that is worth it. It's not like it's $$$'s more.

I would get a 8800GTS over the GTX. Smaller Fab, cooler, higher OC potential, less power. Not sure about the noise. The GTX is sorta like crude, I'm not sure how to say it.

+Here in the US the GT's are down to around $165 after rebates, the GTS close to $210 after rebates. They are both steals for the performance they provide.

Who ever said a 7600 is enough for todays games, um not really. I use one right now and can't play shit smoothly at 1280x1024. Always have to make significant visual compromises for framerate.

It seems that the 8800 GTS 512 OC is taking advantage.

I used to think that 8800 GTX were performing better at higher resolution due to the larger bus. But it seems I was wrong, at least according to the link provided by tihkal (which is enough for me).

just go 8800ultra or 8800GT OC, pci express, its up to you, the diff between the 9 series and the 8 series is very minimal in performance anyways. the human eye can only see like what 30FPS, its up to you, unless you are doing some sort of heavy virtual graphix design, its up to you mang.

It's only not smooth because if you're peaking 30 FPS you're probably averaging mid to low 20's.

The human eye physically can only see 29.97 frames per second. Anything lower and you begin to notice it, 25-29 and you start to wonder whats wrong, 20-25 and you notice a significant chop.

you might be able to only physically see 29.97frames per second but i assure you the rest of humanity can see alot mo
re.
doesnt 29.97 just happen to be the ntsc standard aswell? why do people confuse TV's with framerate they work differently to how you see and trick your mind into thinking the picutre is smooth.

some scientists claim the human eye can see hundreds of frames a second.

wether your brain can process them all frame by frame is obviously something else Razz but you can definetly see the different between 85 and 120
