Posted: Mon, 17th Mar 2008 21:20 Post subject: D-Link DGL-4300 and Vista - slow internet speed |
|
 |
Okay, so i recently moved in to my new apartment. Here, two other guys + me share a 24 mbit connection for internet, wich isn't bad at all really, since it's cheap as hell
But the problem is, i'm getting really slow speeds! And the problem seems to be with my computer, since the other two doesnt seem to have any problems. I'm getting like 2mbits max! Also, the guy living here before me didn't have any issues either.
Now, im fairly certain im the only one of us three using Vista, can it have anything to do with that? Also my NIC is a Realtek Gigabit PCI-E, so im not using wireless.
Any help greatly appreciated!

Have you checked if you get any errors on the line? Do netstat -e for that.

Now i've tried rolling back the NIC driver, updating it to the latest version and disabling the IPv6 protocol.. Still slow!

Try to set it to 100Mbit full duplex manually, assuming the that's the routers maximum speed.

I found a posting on a forum about a guy who had uninstalled a Windows Vista patch (KB929735) and after this uninstallment... his internet was up and running again ...
other things to try that dont seem to help most people
* Stop the Qos service
* Stop the ipv6 functionality
* Stop the phlishing filter
* Uninstall Mcaffee
* Do a "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" in a CMDbox
try power cycling your router and putting your nic to 100mbit half duplex.
if you dont have mcafee im convinced its your nic card maybe try a bunch of different drivers

could you try a nic card from one of the other machines that belong to your friends so we could rule out your nic card as beeing the problem?

Ahh, this is just fucking great.. I logged on the router, downloaded the latest firmware (1.8, from the swedish D-Link site), saved my config to a file, upgraded the firmware, applied the settings from my backup-file. What now? I can't login anymore. No password is correct. The one it had previously, it's not "admin", it's not "password", it's not blank.. nothing fucking works..

try username "admin" password "" (blank) thats the default login
theres no router settings that would make the router slower with vista anyway and a firmware upgrade wont do anything to your speeds if everyone elses are fine
its vista thats the problem if you already tried 2 nics and they were both slow ,but if it makes u feel any better my dgl4300 is using firmware 1.7 and my speeds under vista ultimate were exactly the same as on win2k and xp (2MB+/s)

I don't know if this is causing the problem or not, but it might give you a clue (read the entire thread).
Certainly isn't anything on the router as far as I can tell, unless the two other guys fucked you up with the QoS settings, which I doubt

Just did a reboot before i read your post, and never started a media player before trying my speed.. so it isn't that either.. goddamnit i hate weird problems like this!
Also, what is so odd is that i had around 6-700 kb/s when i moved in, and then all of a sudden it went down to the current 170 kb/s..

This makes no sense at all! Now it's up to about 500 kb/s again! What the hell is going on?!

That would make more sense if my speed varied when it was slow.. when it is slow, it will NOT go over 170 kb/s by more than 1-2 kbs..

emr if i may make a suggestion... change your MAC adress if you can, the symptom sounds like your box is being throttled somehow, by the router, your isp, no idea. Changing the MAC might help there. *shrug*

Quote: | k if you say so. There is no other reason why youre net is LIMITED to 170 kbps believe me.
@snop1050 If that was the case he wouldnt have constant 170 kbps. Download would vary all the time.
| well the router hes connected to doesnt let you throttle someones connection i have the same one
