Can anyone suggest a good Heatsink and Fan for an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor? What are some of the feature to look for when purchasing a HSF. Do I need to apply thermal paste on it or do they come preapplied?

some come pre-applied but it's always a good idea to have arctic silver on it, it's the best
As for heatsink, it depends what you want, some people seem to think the whatever tower one that stands 17" off your motherboard is the best when in fact it doesn't do crap for the rest of the board.

I personally use that one, it's huge, quite, and it blows quite a bit of air across my board keep the rest of the components cool (chipset & memory etc)

I recommend the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme heatsink, just because it's really good, works awesome with OC'ing.
Watercooled 5950X | AORUS Master X570 | Asus RTX 3090 TUF Gaming OC | 64Gb RAM | 1Tb 970 Evo Plus + 2Tb 660p | etc etc

There are a coupple of new ones on the market now.
Check out this article LINK
The Xigmatek HDT-S1283 looks pretty good actually. But sure, the Thermalright is still way up there, but big!. I would recomend a water cooled solution myself, but you need some tinkering and a bit more money of course.
Pretty extensive list of heatsinks and temps etc

|

Quote: | 1,155g heavy with ten heatpipes
Scythe has officially launched what is possiblt the largest CPU cooler ever, the Orochi. This new cooler features ten heatpipes and weighs at 1,155g, and thats without a fan.
The dimensions of this cooling behemoth from Scythe are 120 x 194 x 155mm which makes it unsuitable for many PC cases, so Scythe has an important notice stating that you should check the dimensions of your PC case before buying this cooler.
It doesn't stop there, because Scythe is shipping this cooler with a fan, although this cooler shouldn't have any problems cooling most CPU's without adding a fan. If you are going for some serious cooling then add another 130g with a 140mm low noise fan that gives 29.39CFM of airflow as it spins at 500rpm.
Scythe's Orochi can be mounted on Intel's socket 478 and LGA 775 processors, as well as AMD's socket 754, 939, 940 and AM2 processors. It just looks impressive, ten 6mm heatpipes going trough a large heatsink sounds like overkill, but from Scythe's point of view, size does matter.

I have a Tuniq Tower, and I think it does an amazing job on my E6600.
