In a few days I want to buy a new configuation. I've chosen for the following parts:
Asus P5E,
Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q6600,
MSI NX8800 GTS OC Editie,
Kingston HyperX 2 GB DDR2-1066 Kit
I've chosen the Asus P5E intel x38 mainboard because it supports PCIe 16x 2.0, DDR2-1066 and a FSB of 1600Mhz which I thought would come in handy for an cpu upgrade in the future.
An other option was to choose an Nvidia mainboard so that I could upgrade to SLI in the future if the price of another (same) graphics card has dropped. However, if I want to buy an nvidia mainboard that also supports PCIe16x 2.0 and a 1600Mhz FSB it will be too pricy.
So my question is: Would you buy an intel board which supports PCIe 16x 2.0 and a 1600Mhz FSB so you can upgrade the system with a nice new CPU in the future or an nvidia board (without PCIe 16x 2.0 and a 1600Mhz FSB) which you can upgrade to an SLI configuration in the future??

Got a ASUS Rampage Formula X48 on order, that's the DDR2 version. Running a EVGA 680i at the mo. Unless you are really planning to go hardcore on SLI, I would not even look at Nvidia at the mo.

Intel!
SLI sucks. If you want "sli" with a single card, you could always buy a 2 core card from nvidia. but it has the same problems as sli with 2 cards.

I agree. only reason to go nvidia is to get sli.
With intel you have a lot more options, and you can also expect better compatibility with future intel processors when you go with an intel chipset.
Sli upgrading is also a bad idea. sli is only good for people with too much money, so you can just buy 2 cards right away and get better performance.
if you're an average gamer one card is enough, and by the time games require you to upgrade, you can just get a next generation single card instead of trying to find a one year old card to add to yours in SLI and you'll have the same or better performance.
like a friend of mine who got an sli board and a 7800 GTX a long time ago.
By the time his 7800 gtx wasn't fast enough anymore for the latest games the 8800 GTX was out and the 7800 GTX wasn't even in production anymore (replaced by 7900 gtx)
