Evil or Very Mad
wtf is this shit, ive got tons of 720p movies and at least half of them are 1280 x 500-something. why mark the movies as 720p when they really arent :S

Would stretching the movies, which are rarely 16:9, make it all better?

there isnt a face or a palm on this entire fucking planet big enough for this...

youre just fucking around, right? this shit is too stupid to be real... 720p is the uncropped resolution... this is like arguing that an original blu-ray disc doesnt really have the movie in 1080p because its got 'stupid black bars on it' and it doesnt fill the entire screen...

if you are kidding around, im sorry... its too late and im drinking and i really cant tell right now Sad

720p stands for the HD resolution limit of 1280x720 progressive
that is, the image has to fit inside that box to be called 720p - be it vertical OR horizontal resolution
if it's higher than 1280 wide it can't be called 720p
same with 1080i/p being 1920x1080

Nah, it's a regularly asked question. The "720p = HD" norm is totally random, that's the problem.

Height. The numbers, such as 480p, are height. You don't call 1920x1080 "1920p" Laughing

And that's the problem. Height naming is an archaic convention which is no longer correct in this day and age. Indeed, "1920p" and "1280p" would have been a lot more appropriate.

ugh, obviously, but how does 480p make sense for something that is 720p WIDE

that would make the ar 1.5... and when has that ever been a traditional or acceptable AR for a movie? wouldnt the correct AR mean it should be 404p for a 720p wide video?

i only said 720p WIDE because i couldnt remember the actual used vertical p that is used for 2.35 or 16:9, but it sure as hell isnt 480!

only answer i can come up with is that its a misused archaic usage for video thats not SMALL, but below 720... dont movie trailers specify 480p as an option? perhaps it comes from that...

480p denotes 640x480, it has nothing to do with 720 pixels.

edit: apparently there is 720x480 according to teh wiki entry.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/480p

well 480p is specifically being used for movie releases, and i suspected it was due to 640x480, but thats not very relivant for film releases or trailers anymore...

from wiki:
SMPTE 293M defines a 480p59.94 standard with twice the data rate of Rec. 601, using 720 × 480 active pixels

but how the hell is that relate to an acceptable movie release specification. its just stupid.... it in no way relates to production movies and really shouldnt be used in that capacity...

i have read that wiki entry before when i was trying to find the answer a while back, but it didnt make the slightest sense, and given that its being used alongside 720 and 1080p it makes even less sense to use it.

Plus fucking one. I know you people have been mocking and laughing at kazemaky, but the guy has a fucking good point; STOP naming it "720" if it's NOT 720 pixels high. I'm tired of that bullshit naming convention - just as I'm tired of marketing spiel that states "1080p!" even though 280 of those vertical pixels are nothing but dead, black, screen.

If it's not 1080 pixels high, stop saying it is.
