Hey, Im sure with recent games like STALKER : Shadow Of Chernobyl and COD4's sniper mission this year most of you by now will have heard of Chernobyl.

Heres a little info.. It certainly proves for great viewing if you have a few hours to burn.

Well, for those of you who don't know, or have heard about it but haven't seen anything about it, the "Chernobyl disaster", or reactor accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is the worst nuclear power plant accident in history and the only of the level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale, resulting in a severe nuclear meltdown. On 26 April 1986 at 01:23:40 a.m. reactor number four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant located in the Soviet Union near Pripyat in Ukraine exploded. Further explosions and the resulting fire sent a plume of highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere and over an extensive geographical area.

I was just searching away on google and youtube and I found some extraordinary videos. Check these links :

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=101OEaksU0s - A guy visits Pripyat, the abandoned town in which COD4's Gilly mission took place.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=fPsIVXM73qQ - A video showcasing some of the aftermath of the disaster; see the dog at the end heavily deformed by radiation found in one of the abandoned buildings.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=aw-ik1U4Uvk - A rescue helicopter crashes during a routine flight to save survivors (I think) this is truly one of the saddest stories. From what I could gather from some googling, the pilot lost consciousness (possibly due to heavy exposure to radiation? not sure) and the propeller blades collided with a metal pillar of the NPP. All of the crew died.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=6c0r3rBZVm0 - This is quite a sinister video.
Quote:
The author of this video, Michail Nazarenko, was making a film about an atomic plant and happened to be in Pripyat. He also filmed the evacuation there. At the day of evacuation, the official level of radiation in Pripyat reached 1 Roentgen per hour, but people say it was 7 Roentgens. This makes a difference, because in first case, the population would die within two or three months. While in second, people would die in several days.

The true extent of this disaster is still so unknown to most of the world. I find it amazing yet scary when I think that if some NPP as small as the one at Chernobyl has a disaster, just think if one of the major NPP's of today has a similar disaster. Scary stuff.

I don't wanna turn this into a debate thread really, just thought I would spread some of these interesting videos. I am sure someone will find it interesting to see. If so, leave a comment.

And last but not least, RIP. to everyone who lost there life in some way to this disaster.

Btw, it's one of my dream vacations - going there, but I just can't find some company yet. You're welcome to join me in summer if you want )

Yeah I remember it like it was yesterday. It happened on my birthday.

Anyone remember the Chernobyl virus? It hit both my machines years ago too. Luckily it didn't overwrite the bios on them both. But I had to spend my entire birthday reformatting and reinstalling.

It's insignificant to the real disaster though, I suppose that goes without saying.

i love you jenni you are so awesome.

I watched a documentary on chernobyl disaster, it was awesome to watch, i think HBO or something I dunno, but it was sad to see the heroes of the disaster riddled with such disease afterwards with no help.
