WOW! just in time for me not to care! 
nah that was pretty harsh, but to be honest i know my 8800gtx will VERY happily last me until the generation after this one
good news about the d9e is that 8800 gt's are going to come down in price nicely, so people can happily grab 1 or 2 of those and be very very happy gamers.
and dx10.1 is a fucking gimmick

Nice, planning on getting one of those D9E babies eventually, but will not be an early adopter. Had so many issues with my 8800 in the first two months, so will wait a bit this time.

thats the sheer brilliance of living in nz. by the time we finally get shit, all the kinks have been ironed out because the rest of the world has allready had it for 6 months
of course the down side is the whole 'getting shit 6 months after everyone else'... but oh well... thats the price we pay for being a country noone would ever attack, nuke, invade, and that never ever gets natural disasters... its a rough trade-off, but we make what we can out of it...

I've got an ASUS EN7900GT 256MB with the OFFICIAL nVidia Drivers (last ones) and i get artifacts on crysis n UT3....

artifacts can come from overheated card, or there was a fuckup while you were installing drivers... either that, or yeah, your cards buggered... hope its an evga, or you bought it from a very understanding store
*edit* oh, hehe... we were talking about 8800's, and i assumed you had one too... just noticed what your card actually is... dude, those arent artifacts, those are tears... your graphics card is crying because of what your trying to force it to do... tsk... crysis and ut3 on that card thats like trying to get a fat kid to run up a hill

meh, ut3 probably runs fine on any computer at max settings.. i dont think its a particularily demanding game... i was referring more to crysis than anything. that is NOT an acceptable card for crysis at any setting.

What do you think its smarter? To wait for 3 months and buy nextgen card OR to buy now and watch the card loose its value in 3 months?

There will not be midrange cards of the 9G series until later in the summer of 08', so unless he's prepared to either wait long time or spend shitloads of money in three months, I'd say buy the 8800GT now. It's a good card and will last for a year ahead, at which point one will be able to buy a better midrange card.

yeah. the enthusiast variants of the geforce 9 series will no doubt be about twice as fast as anything of the current generation.
but the first cards to arrive will also cost at least twice as much as the 8800 GT.
Plus as inatan said, the 8800 gt is really good enough for anything that's coming out anytime soon (yeah, except crysis maybe if you need to play on max settings), so it's a great card to buy right now.
Now if it was only a month or less until we get the next generation, then I'd suggest to at least wait until we get some benchmarks, but 3 months or more, that's a long time in the hardware world.

I'm planning on getting the 8800GTS as well. Starting pricepoint for the 9000 series will be 700ish. Not worth it with the 8800GTS (hopefully) and GT being amazing for their cost.

There has to be a reason for the lack of stock though, and personally I think it has to do with the fact that once the 8800GTS 512MB becomes available the 512MB 8800GT is going to suddenly become completely unavailable. The card took so much attention away from the new 3870 and 3850 that people simply don’t know these ATI counterparts exist. If NVIDIA can ride this wave going into the Christmas break then they’re laughing all the way to the bank.
If someone is happy to overclock, it’s hard to recommend the GTS to them. However, it could end up being the only card in stock over this holiday period. Time will tell. |
