My friend wants to buy a good horror book, preferably by H.P. Lovecraft or Clive Barker. Seeing as he doesn't have any experience with neither of these authors what would you suggest based on personal experiences, what are the pros and cons of each author?

Lovecraft can be overrated. At the Mountains of Madness is a very long confusing and a plodding read. He's a genius, but completely barmy. His obsession with the occult and the Cthulhu God he goes on about can be a grind.
Clive Barker is pretty good, the Books of Blood, actually genre defining, in the sense that it's real original British style horror writing, very strange, creepy, bloody and unrelentingly dark. Not at all like James Herbert, or Stephen King, who's writing I think tend to overdramatize, and be overly sentimental.
The first Hellraiser film captures Barkers writing very well, and can be picked up in his book The Hellbound Heart. Weaveworld is ok, but kind of feels overly ambitious.
I'd very much recommend Edgar Allan Poe, and more recently the lesser known, but far superior too King, Richard Laymon.

Yeah, every artist has a defining work, and the Books of Blood set Barker right up amongst the best Horror around.
Criticaly written at a time during Thatchers era of minors strikes, depressed industrial decline, and free market obsessed money grabbing yuppie elites... dark choatic worlds reflecting back against the dustructive greed of eighties Britain. A metaphorical appocalypse
The books are like an unconcious reflex action against this. Others followed in a simerlar vain such as Neil Gaiman... this is the best kind of fiction. Once Barker went state side and started working with Hollywood, it all went a bit tame and down hill. Shame.
