So you should already know that Sony has officially made similar moves in the US to what we saw in the UK regarding PS3's price and specs.
Speaking about the move in the Wall Street Journal, US Sony boss Jack Tretton said, "While we were incredibly excited about the technology in PS3 and while it was future-proofed to some degree, it was a bit ahead of its time. The downside of all that technology was the price we had to offer it to consumer at retail. We knew $599 was going to be a challenge for some people based on traditional videogame pricing."
The comments reflect somewhat of a turnaround. At launch Sony stood by its company line that the console wasn't expensive considering what you were getting inside the box.
The Wall Street Journal also reports that during the interview Tretton "conceded that removing that capability, along with a few other features, isn't dramatically reducing Sony's cost of manufacturing the console but will instead encourage buyers of the entry-level PlayStation 3 to purchase more games designed specifically for the new system."
Sony's own research apparently showed that compatibility with PlayStation 2 games isn't likely to be missed by customers, who should already own the older system. |

Especially at the fact there are only a handful of good games there is to buy for the PS3.

i enjoyed my ps2 for the sheer amount of rpgs that the system had, in my opinion the ps3 has took a big step backwards.

Maybe if there were actually some good games out for the PS3 this kind of logic would make sense. He's just making excuses.

It was partial software emulation. The original US consoles had the EE+GS chip in them for near-full compatibility but the EU ones had only the GS. The EE's work was software emulation but now on the new PS3s the GS has been removed too for zero backwards compatibility.

One of my firend told me that SONY are bringing the PS3 at the same price of teh X360 soon, dont know if its true...but if it is, the price + the BC removed are a desperate measure for poeple to get a PS3 and buy their awefull games.
Lets take a minute and think of what happen since the last 2 years.
SONY released in the press the release date of the PS3, then it got delayed for like 10 months making a lot of gamers angry who said fuck it and went to buy a X360.
A lot of game company shut the door on SONY cause it was too expensive and a pain in the ass to develop games for the PS3.
They lost exclusive titles they've been having for the last 5 or 6 years that are now released at the same time on X360 and PS3 (GTA 4 and Virtua Fighter 5 amongst other games). The only game that comes to my mind who stayed loyal to sony is Metal Gear.
So yeah, SONY are desperate cause they are getting owned by teh X360 and the Wii. I took a look arounf and the only exclusive games that i want to play on the PS3 are Resistance and Warhawk so theres no way i'll buy that console for 2 games.
But removing BC that poeple will have to buy PS3 games is fuckin stupid

There's no denying the slow start for the PS3, but within a year or so there will be some AAA titles out, and this drought will be forgotten, I'm not a Sony fanboy by any means.. my PS3 gathers as much dust as the next guy and I was never into the PS2 gaming scene much.. but if history teaches us anything, Sony will be a major force soon enough.

Maybe you´re right, but what i find funny is they couldn´t pull this off from the start, and that they have all these sleazy tactics to make you buy a PS3. Or a PSP. I love my PS2, and ofcourse i loved the PS1 in its days, but i really dislike Sony, i´ll give ya that.

Of course they will...well i hope so for them but dont forget that the X360 wont stop having kickass exclusive titles in the meantime so the PS3 will always be a few step back. I remember all my friends who bought a PS2 because of the exclusive GTA games and they are probably not the only ones. GTA 4 was the game who would allow them to remove their head from teh dirt to catch a glimpse of fresh air...and they screw that too...so just sit back and see whats going to happen

What AAA titles? Apart from MGS4 I don't see anything exclusive on the PS3's horizon that could be considered AAA.
It doesn't matter if the 360 doesn't have exclusive titles because it's the cheaper of the two systems and also has far more games out, so if an individual needs to pick between the two for a duel platform game they go for the 360. Not to mention the fact that the majority of the games on both systems perform better on the 360.

Well I was leaning more toward titles that have yet to be announced. The industry has a way of sneaking up on you, one day you just happen to browse to your favorite gaming site and then out of nowhere you see "<INSERT RIDICULOUS GAME HERE> ANNOUNCED!" and you're like "oooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh damn"
I know this is every tired PS3 argument all rolled into one here, but there is still hope for Killzone 2 (if they iron out their AI and stuff), Haze has a chance, Final Fantasy 13 will probably be pretty decent, although I haven't been into Final Fantasy lately (just started FF12 alittle while ago).
And yah, on it's best day that's still only like 3 or 4 games. I wish they would stop wasting good ideas on the PSP (Final Fantasy Crisis Core and Final Fantasy Dissidia). And maybe that FF7 remake will land? And all personal opinions aside, FF7 was a AAA title back in the day, and it might be sad milking of the series, but damn, the old Square fans are really begging for that one.
Of course time will tell, even my post here will be lost in time, and if it works out, I won't even remember to tell you all I told you so. 
EDIT: Just throwing some ideas out that will probably be out someday.
- Shadow of the Colossus 2 will probably be out someday.
- Kingdom Hearts 3 probably.
- God of War 3 (or whatever it's up to now) probably.
That's just a few off the top of my head. I think there's some hope left still for unannounced projects.

Well it's hype certainly made it out to be one! In the end it turned out to be an above average God of War clone.

For me, it's games you can't stop playing for a while and after some time can sit and play again. Not many of those these days...

Doom 3 and Halo 3 were both hailed in reviews. Both sucked and added nothing new.
Sony is somewhat of a lost cause. It will never be the success that Sony hoped for. It didn't even make it in Japan, where it should have hit if anywhere.

Well thats your opinion, and it's certainly the opinion of the minority. I'm not saying it's any less valid because of this, but it's the majority that dictate success, and thats what we're really discussing here.
For what it's worth I don't think either of those two games added anything new either, but Halo 3 co-op is some of the most fun I've had with a game.

I liked Doom 3, it wasn't that bad, and the Coop mod was great fun. Never understood what was so special about the Halos... Maybe because I don't own a console, but I doubt it.
