|
 |
This is giving me headache
The router is a Xavi X5258-P2, got it from my ISP. Now i have a different ISP, but i still have the router. Bredbandsbolaget was the previous ISP, for you swedes.
Now, my own PC connected to it - works perfectly.
Now i also have a laptop wich i want to connect to it.
When ive made no changes to the router, the laptop connect to the network, but cant get a IP-adress.
So i log in on the router, and see that DHCP isnt enabled. So I enable it. Now the laptop gets an ip, so does my PC, but none of them can connect to the internet..
Disable DHCP - same problem as before. My PC works fine, the laptop doesnt.
Huge amounts of love to anyone who can help me solve this shit

And another thing - I now also have a pc hooked directly to the router by wire - and that doesnt get any connectivity either! Its just Limited or No Connectivity, just like the laptop..
Werid as fuck.. i used to have my PC connected to the router through wireless, exactly the same way i do now, and i also connected my 360 by wire, and that worked fine too!

At work I had a strange problem at a school I sat up 20 laptops. A laptop would never found the whireless network it should have as default. Other PCs/laptops would find it. The laptop that didnt find that network would find other networks, outside, at our config room at work. So, i resat the wireless access point at the school. Still didnt find it, but other laptops did. Uninstalled/installed, disabled/enabled. Same shit.
Had to boot up a new image on it (PXE boot)
All the other laptops had exact same image too, and it was a HP 6110. Got about 250 6110s at the schools. Some teachers got more pwnage models.
Strange shit :S

I havent seen that feature, maybe i just missed it.. but, in my testing, i have gotten a 192.x.x.x or 168.x.x.x IP, and then i cant access the internet..
This is all weird, cause i used to have my pc connected to it wireless, then my 360 connected to it by wire.. and that worked perfectly..

_SiN_ I will tell you right away, the way Glocalnet and Bredbandsbolaget uses these modems they are not supposed to function as routers. They are all in bridged mode because you get five WAN IP's with your connection. So up to five PC's connected at the same time works great if you have BBB or GN. However you do not get any internal network or so.
So the question is, does your new ISP give you more then one WAN IP? That could be the problem that each customer gets a maximum of one IP.
The modem (more correct then router in this case) can be set in PPPoE mode somehow too with some Telnet command (don't remember it though) but then the firewall in the modem will be activated and you can't open ports and stuff in it. NAT will also be disabled.
The Fact: If you're not on BBB, Glocalnet or Telenor (they all use the same system because they are the same company) and using more then one PC get a real router or a new router-modem thingie.
Edit:
The DHCP function in the modem is turned off by default because of the IP distribution from BBB/GN. I can also see why it worked great before with BBB because of the five WAN IP's. Your new ISP most likely has one WAN IP per customer.

Thank you for a good answer!
No, im not on BBB/Telenor anymore, so yeah, thats probably the problem here. Reason i switched it out was because the router i had connected before (A Netgear WGT624-something) had a weaker signal strength.. Cause my pc is pretty far away, and i now have 24mbits and the signal strength with the Netgear stops at around 5-6..
By the way, is there any way to connect the routers? Maybe use one as a accesspoint?

Call your ISP, ask how many IP's you get and work it from there.
You could also ask them if there are any MAC-adress conflicts when assigning the IP's.

Well there is your problem as the Xavi 5258 will never work good as a router, it is not designed to be one and there is no firmware that I know of that does it good either.
So using the Netgear or a router with the Xavi is the best way to go.

Well, i ditched the Xavi completely, i already had a standard ADSL-modem for the Netgear wich works fine. No need for two wireless units, right?
Or, could i use the Xavi and the Netgear, then I connect MY pc to the Xavi, then let the others connect to the Netgear? Since the Xavi gives me a better signal strength..?

If you connect your Netgear to the Xavi the Netgear will get the IP. So no, no connection Netgear and a computer to the Xavi...
Actually I am surprised you get better signal strength from the Xavi, they usually suck big time with wireless.

If you really want to get a good signal get one of these...

Another thing that you could try with your Netgear is to switch channel, the Xavi uses Channel 11 by default and perhaps most of your neighbors use channel 6 (D-Link default) or similar. So try channel 11 in the Netgear too, might work
