I have a VW polo from 2000 and been working fine so far, today I've got a weird problem, the oil pressure light turned on and started beeping, I immediately stopped the car, checked the oil, (it was halfway between min and max), refilled an extra 2 Lt of oil, making it slightly above the max level.

I started driving again, and the car went fine for like 20 minutes in the highway, when I got out to the main road, the first ascent I came across, the car didn't have any strength, I was like in first shift, with max acceleration, and the car wouldn't pass 20-30 Km/h.

Then I noticed something else, the car has had it's check engine light turned on for as long as I remembered, it was already repaired twice and they said they didn't knew how to turn it off, but yesterday I noticed that every time I was in 1st or 2nd shift, the check engine light blinked for like 3 times.

I've been browsing online and I can't find a clear answer to my problem, anyone has any idea what the problem might be?

There are no noises whatsoever coming from the engine, the only noticeable problem is the lack of strength in ascents.

Any ideas how to repair it?

My next paycheck is coming only 20 days from now, I kinda went overwhelmed with my new rig Laughing

Is it safe to drive it for short distances if I try to avoid ascents and wait the 20 days, or is this a critical problem?

Take it to a garage. I wouldn't drive it around until you get it checked out though. Just because you get someone at a garage to look at it, doesn't mean you want them to do the repairs straight away.

But here just to get the car checked I have to drop like €100, and since I kind of spend pretty much everything in my new rig, I have to wait for my next paycheck, which is due to be mailed only in the 5th of July.

Since I have a few bucks for the next 20 days I really didn't want to spend it now, and as far as I know, when there is something critical with the engine you're supposed to hear loud noises coming from it right?

The car drives fine, no noises, doesn't shake, it's only the minimal strength while making an ascent and the blinking light, I only go out like 3 days a week to the supermarket to buy food and essentials which is like 2 Km away from home.

Under these conditions, do you think I'll be relatively safe for 20 days?

What you call the oil light is probably the check engine light. It could be a lot more things than oil. Lack of strength could for example be worn in the clutch/transmission plates. Not sure what the proper english name is.

I would guess the worst that would happen would be you lose all power and could increase the cost of repairs.

I'm suprised you can't take it anywhere and get someone to look at it for free. Can't you take it to a small garage and get them to take a look?

Its been a long long time since i worked as a mechanic so i don't want to risk giving any bad advice.

Already know what it is, a friend came by, and checked it, and in like 5 minutes he figured the engine was operating in 3 cycles only and that I needed to replace the spark plugs, the check engine light is probably either a reading of it or a sensor read error of something else.

Problem solved, will buy the sparks tomorrow Laughing

If a plug is bad, you'd definately hear it, it would either misfire, or run on only 3 of 4 cylinders Smile Then again, if they're worn out, i guess you'd get a very poor spark, resulting in a weak car. Hope it's the problem, if it is, its an easy, quick and cheap fix Smile
