Whats the best way to do this since I've been googling and I can't find a good solution.
I want the C Partition to be Windows XP and the D Partition to be Vista.

You install XP first on C. You install Vista later on D.
You'll be presented with a menu every time you start the PC. You'll notice (or not), that while in Vista the D drive will be shown as C. Don't let that scare you.
Have fun!
BTW, that PC in your sig should run Vista just fine...

Yeah, sure, no problem.
You already have XP. If you have two hdds or two partitions, you're set. If you don't, you need to resize your current XP partition and make a new one. I think the Vista install allows you to do that, so I'll assume it does. If it doesn't, I'll explain here how to resize it.
Anyway, boot from the Vista DVD. Choose a new installation (not upgrade). If you have two disks or two partitions, choose one that isn't XP's. Let it install. You'll have a menu at startup that will allow you to run Vista or XP. If you have only one partition on one HD, choose resize and free at least 20GB for good performance (indexing needs space too). Format the newly created space to NTFS and install Vista there. You'll have a menu at startup that will allow you to run Vista or XP.
Have fun, Cox!

Quote: | Put your Vista DVD in your DVD rom. and reboot your system. make sure your BIOS setup is set on DVD in first boot.
on Vista os continue on step by config and delete your partition and make a new partition on your C:\ drive and click format
now your vista is ready to run next time you boot on your pc follow instruction step by step. and your vista is ready used...
but be careful do all your card etc/ is not functioning properly so in that case you must to download all in the Internet in order to get back on normal. | Basically reverse to what Leo just said

@ CaptainCox
If you try to install vista on another hard drive that XP's one then launch Vista setup from within XP, otherwise dual boot may not be setup correctly.

Well VISTA has been installed on the same drive since I got it, just another partition. I see how it goes. I worst case I might just do a clean install here...but that's weekend work

I surrendered to science and did a CLEAN INSTALL! thought I was going crazy for a bit as i had "RAID" disabled in the BIOS ...took me a bit to realize why i only had 2 drives instead of 1.
