I'm thinking about buying Battlefield 2142, but I need your opinion. Which one, in your opinion, is more fun, and why?
I like realism, but I like SciFi if it's presented realistic enough (so I'll have no qualms playing 2142). However, which one feels more fluid and 'better'? Do the vehicles have more balance in 2142?
Sorry for the newbie-ish question, thanks in advance.

They are almost the same exact game so it really depends on what skin you would like.. the today skin, or the tomorrow skin?

I play both, but I have little more fun with BF2 than 2142. If I were you I'd get both, since they are ridiculously cheap now anyway.

I actually already have Battlefield 2, and think it's a great game. I just don't really like the way how unbalanced most vehicles are. Also, it's full of infantry-only servers which in my opinion takes away from the Battlefield magic.

I like 2142 far better as the unlocks are better as well as the overall class balancing. It just provides far more options for your character.
The new addon is pretty decent too, well, for £5 anyway. The new map on the addon is cool, as are the new vehicles.

I liked 2142 more. Maybe it was the 8800 that influenced my judgment.

I've liked BF2142 for over 400 hours and still have fun in it, go for it Balance is fine with vehicles, I use all for different purposes and everyone has it's weaknesess. Hover tanks and walkers of course are my favorites, gunship is nice too. Play most with engineer, so those are also the most fun to kill (or try).
Every infantry class is also very well balanced now with new stuff and patch adjustments. Supports new gun is a bit sucky (or hard to aim) and suppoert is the weakest in open spaces, but stationary with right gun and close spaces with right gun and user it's one of the strongest, so it evens out nicely.

Northern strike has 3 maps and 2 of them is playable in titan mode and they have a totally new feel. Goliath and Hachimotos bring new dimensions as well. The one map that is not is night version sniper heaven. Best feature about northen strike is that every badge/pin/ribbon is an unlock, so you get those new stuff quite fast and also missing stuff from old unlocks. Only downside is that the server amount of the booster back went down after the initial boost, but the new cadgets, maps and vehicles are worth the price. Oh and booster back maps are way harder as there are usually more of the best playing.
EDIT: seems like you were talking about the 1.40 beta patch that I wasn't aware when I replied, but I'll keep the booster pack info there as well *goes to read about the beta patch*
----
The Battlefield 2142 1.4 beta update includes the following changes:
- Fixed an exploit that would allow commanders to call Orbital and EMP strikes before it had fully recharged.
- The Clark RDX Shotgun can now detonate other nearby explosives.
- EU Assault Rifle recoil and deviation have been slightly reduced.
- Bianchi and Shuko LMGs recoil reduced.
- Clark Shotgun rate of fire increased.
- Added an autosave to kit customisations. After you customise a kit and spawn in with that kit, the customisation will be automatically saved until you change it and spawn in again. Note that you must spawn in with a particular kit for it to be saved.
- Added a new map, Highway Tampa.
Featuring Titan and Dual Assault Lines this map focuses on classic Battlefield vehicle warfare with a futuristic twist. In Dual Assault lines each team can capture the enemies’ home base by controlling all of the neutral points. Whether you choose to skillfully coordinate your mechanized assault or dominate through overwhelming force Highway Tampa is the newest home of all out warfare.
Niceness! Autosave for customations will rule. Others seem good as well, tempting to go beta, I've only used retail patches so far. Of and that Clark RDX shotgun was the new support gun that I mentioned, nice to see it getting more usefull, haven't even unlocked it yet (3 unlocks missing).

yeah I've also wanted to know this, I've played BF2 before and am thinking of buying either that or BF2142.
according to xfire, BF2 has more people playing. so is it hard at all to find a good server in BF2142?

Night time is slower (like 5-12am), but eny other time there are under 100ping great servers all the time and full, atleast in europe.

i have both of these, 2142 is great but i have more fun with BF2 and its mods right now.
that new map is the same as the BF2 version, right? Highway Tampa sucks IMO. its all flat with no cover. its a tank map, if you spawn and there is no tank, hope there is a car, and if there is no car: you are screwed. it will take forever to get anywhere on foot, and if you do walk you will likely get sniped since there is no cover.
i think 2142 is technically better than BF2... it loads faster, less lag, the new unlock system is great, the awards are actually worth getting since they have a point value, the rank system seems to works better than in BF2 (which i might add has not updated stats in at least 2 weeks right now). i see less bunny hopping and dolphin diving like antics in 2142. chopper whoring is not so frustrating, but then again its not as cool either!
in the end, i think BF2 has the better theme and the mods coming out are fabulous, like POE2 and Project Reality. 2142 got old for me, but its worth a look.

I wish they'd do a proper sequel to Battlefield 1942 instead. (Yes, I know about mods..but I'd like a game from the producers instead)
shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.

i lol at EA, for the booster Northern Strike was touting a new game mode.... ASSAULT LINES!!! what did it turn out to be? the "defending" teams main was locked and non cap until all the other flags were taken *lose boner here*.

read about Project Reality game modes there, which include Advance & Secure, Insurgency, and Extraction.

Supporting a game that make tanks explode when they are in contact of water is not a good thing to do :\

Both sucks.
But comparing just the two, BF2 is superior. BF2142 is just another EA-milkin-the-cow-product that looks like and plays like shit.
