Like I said, it doesn't look like it's gonna impress... It saddens me really, I hated Intel for many years and was sad when I had to buy they products again.

Only thing I hate about these press releases is the company just talks up their shit like it's a holy grail.

Chances are it's going to suck. AMD just don't have the capital to stay competitive anymore.

For desktops, Barcelona will probably lead multithreaded performance and applications that strongly depend on high bandwidth, but single threaded workloads may slightly favor Intel’s designs.
doesnt sound that bad to me, still time will tell.

They did the same with the GPUs department... Great job AMD!

Hmmm...wish there were more updated games utilizing multicore in the tom's hardware article. Kinda a joke to be comparing dual core and quad core with games like SS2. Still have no idea how games built on brand-new engines perform with the architecture. Which, one would have to assume, AMD is trying to pimp to all the game-makers in order to stay competitive.
Pluses:
I really like the Overdrive software and the ability to use it no matter the maker of your board. Since mbm kinda died off, finding one tool like that has been a pain.
Old/new mobo socket compatibility.
Nice prices for quad.
Negatives:
Still no competition for intel in terms high-end gaming.
Again with the 3dnow/MMX type bullshit with instruction-set differences in brands. Baad cpu makers, bad.
9700 being delayed because of a processor bug?? I know that bugs happen after manufacturing but it is pretty off-putting at what a late stage this processor got delayed. Makes me wonder about anything else that might have slipped through to make the deadline...
As for a purchase, will have to wait and see how intel's 45nm desktop processors overclock and their pricing. If intel blows AMD out of the water once again in terms of headroom and prices competitively, being completely neutral, think I'm gonna stick with the intel camp once again. Could change once I get more impressions, tho.

First off, i have nothing against AMD. I was looking forward to see what the Phenom could do, and AMD has some good prices on their CPUs, so it was indeed interesting. Plus, my last PC was AMD-based.
This isnt looking great for them though. Not bad, absolutely not, but i was hoping for something more, i guess.

Quote: | Viewed from a price/performance perspective, we can say that at this price, AMD's processor offers about the same value for money as Intel's Q6600 quad-core part. |

it seems that AMD is losing on both fronts against Nvidia and Intel.
I wonder if they'll ever be able to catch up again.
At least they offer relatively low priced hardware that's good for the price, but still... the high end market seems to be out of their reach for now.

Competition is everything and considering AMDs track-record of having beaten Intel before on many occasions i d say that it s a fair bet, that intel will have enough competition in the future.

Not by the way things are going atm... It looks like AMD is shooting only toward that mid-low section of market, with nothing to offer in the foreseeable future to high-end users.

the tomshardware mentioned some "enthusiast" products aimed at the performance-conscious buyers. And whenever they brought out a killer-product neither AMD nor ATi ever released press releases saying "w00t w00t, we will have killer products that slay intel hardware in 3 months", they just released better products without much of a warning or excessive white-papering. At least i dont remember paper-launches, when they were about to release superior hardware.
And i m pretty happy to have affordable cpus coming my way, even if intel wil be faster, their cpus arent in my price-range at the moment anyways =)

I agree, AMD might not be pushing out blistering fast cpu hardware like intel, but i like the pricing, it's affordable, plus still has that "next-gen" feel to it, but hey, i am not going to complain, quad is quad, it's even nicer when it's not at the £500 mark for a top of the line intel quad product, that's just wow,
