but on a serious note, usenet is used for a large variety of reasons - just one of these being warez. usenet can't and won't get attacked legally until BitTorrent has eaten the dirt - which once again won't happen.

Some people just like doing it imo. Kinda like you give that bum a nickel or whatever. Their providing for people and I'm sure they feel pretty high and mighty about it (rather they actually get a big ego or not I dunno) I'd personally do it just to laugh in the governments face.

I suspect these ‘sad pathetic’ people have hobbies that they really enjoy and they love it. They love to watch how their stuff grows, and don’t care about ratio or credits or maybe they do? Who cares. I don’t, but I am glad it is out there.
Not everyone lives in the states either. There is a border. Thank god.

Like I said in another thread on this topic..
Newsgroups are in the public domain, they always have been! They have been around since before websites and they wont be stopped by an American company who want to stop the piracy of the world, it just isn't going to happen.

I remember like 5-6 years ago I was on this Edonkey forum called sharereactor, there was this guy who had access to scene release and he was posting them on p2p and sometimes rencoding them to one CD, let me tell you he was a hero on the forums, I don’t remember what I did last week-end but 6 years later I still remember the nick of the guy… Gflavored… he was not getting any ratio or anything else, I guess it always tempting to be the best of the worst than the worst of best...

They get respect for uploading, and like many people have said in this thread, it's for fame and glory. In many respects those credentials are like the scene groups who are in a race to release a game first. There is practically no risk of prosecution for uploading to usenet.
And for the users above who said these people are tragic, and have no lives; Usenet is composed of many, many more power users with fatass connections than any p2p network will ever have. Most of the people who do uploads of scene releases have high-end connections. Either something they have at home, or their workplace most likely. They are not some tragic fucks who sit in a gloomy basement 24/7.
There are also many users with various degrees of connections who upload stuff at the request of others, or re-post older releases. Other than the same motives above, I think what motivates these guys is the same as hospital or charity workers, wanting to help/serve others.

Well first of all MPAA is in bed with some usenet providers. Secondly, it isn't as easy as it sounds, as all usenet servers (and there are thousands upon thousands of them, Giganews is only the largest) are decentralized in design. Usenet is even older than WWW, so no, it's not going to be shut down at all. As someone suggested in this thread, it will never happen, as MPAA/RIAA are focused on dishing out lawsuits to p2p networks, torrent users, which they won't get past anyway.

Bah anyway I look at it like the drug business there will always be a demand, If they shutdown usenet (and that will never happen) people will just find another way to download warez, they are targeting the source like release groups and big distributor such as topsites, If you think about it there's usualy between 50-100 person on a topsite and this will results in hunderd of thousand of copies of a game/movie/cd so why would they care about usenet, the only reason they bust from time to time a p2p/ng user is just so media will talk about it to hopefully sacre a few ppl so that will stop downloading other then that it has no purpose.
