Beginner:
Orion, Abelton Live, Reason, Sonar, Acid
Advanced:
Cubase, Nuendo, Logic
Sample Editing:
Sound Forge, Audition
VST(i):
The Bassline, Absynth, Reaktor, z3ta+, lots of great ones!
VST EFX:
Waves plugins <-- MUST HAVE
Trasher II
Isotope Destroyer
Predatohm
-------------------------
I suppose it all really depends on what you are producing but Waves is the best mastering software i have used. I make hard tech, DnB, and Glitch Core
Have FUN!

Oh BTW, don't let the beginner thing make you think you ever have to use those bigger suites. I know a handful of people using fruity and selling records. It seems it's all about how much you know and how well you can use your tools rather then having all the best tools.

Reason 4 is out now the Thor module rocks hard!!
Depends on what you want to use it for.
For MIDI composing you cant go wrong with ableton live or Sonar. FL studio is a solid app but not as good as ableton inho. With sonar you can audio record like any other DAW and it has a decent learning curve.
For audio you cant beat pro tools its a great efficient engine fast learning curve 7.3 is now cracked. The downside is you're locked to m-audio hardware for the soundcard. (or digidesign for LE i have the DIGI 003 factory and i love it) As a free alternative that has fun fast streamlined audio editing you could try Reaper. MIDI in both these apps is not exactly the best but theyre good at what they do. But like i said for audio protools is hands down the best imho

Using Sonar 6 Producer Ed, Reason 3.04 as I could not get hold of 4 yet (looking but)
Used to run Cuebase, but the latest version has not been cracked yet (wonder if it ever will)
A lot of VST's, to many to list really. Got a Tascam U122L to record my bases, Fender Jazz and a Yamaha Fretless. It also have MIDI that I use with a mini keyboard. The Tascam is super cheap and runs on VISTA, does the job!
Some short snippets of stuff I recorded with this stuff. Yea i like sort a Jazz, Funk etc

http://www.mediafire.com/?10mooljm810 (this one I did for a Showcar Vid display, shown at Geneva Motor Show 2006)
http://www.mediafire.com/?fvewjkexwxm (Sort a George Benson inspired Bass Solo )
http://www.mediafire.com/?2cf1nr9vbym (All done with REASON, overlaying a second Bass Solo groove, Funky)
http://www.mediafire.com/?8d170obtn2n (Again REASON and my Fretless Yamaha, The Rhodes is played with the Mini Keyboard)
Most pretty tacky maybe, but I was trying this and that for arrangement purposes, brass, saxes etc

Both FL and Reason are good applications. Been using them for years altho lately I've been rewiring Reason with Cubase because of its lack of vst support.
If you're into dance type of music I suppose you can stay with FL or reason forever.

I would say it is, just because it so easy to get started in. It doesn't have a super steep learning curve unlike a lot of other apps out there. To me that is a good thing.

Yea, basically what everyone is getting at here is Reason is the best software available.
It's got a small learning curve, but is a VERY powerful tool and has some of the best results.
