|
 |
Well Ive had my Xbox 360 since launch day and it has been fine and I thought I wouldnt have any issues with it after reading everyone elses problems. Turns out that might not be the case. The other day it had barely been on 10 minutes and suddenly it went off and I got the dreaded 3 red lights flashing at me. I turned it off and back on again and it was fine. The next day it happened again so I turned it off and left it off. Having explained this to a friend of mine he told me to wrap it in a heavy towel whilst the console was turned on and then after 45 minutes, turn it off and leave the towel around it for 3 hours to cool. Apparently it reflows all the dry joints he says. Well that sounded like the most ridiculous thing Id ever heard until I googled it!

I will try this when I get home from work! If I dare! Sounds like a potential fire hazard! lol
And this looks to be the cause of the problem ...

One of my mates used a hot air gun on the Motherboard - just waved it over the whole motherboard for about 10 mins and that sorted the joints out...

Not yet. I was using my 360 for about 7 hours last night, 5 of which were downloading Shivering Isles! My red light problem is kinda weird. It was only on about half an hour the first time before it occurred. The second time it happened was as soon as I turned the console on the very next day. It has happened since! When it does tho, I have a towel ready lol.

Maybe it depends on how long you leave it covered for. My friend said 45 minutes. Someone else said 25 minutes. Someone else said 2 hours and someone else left it overnight!

This towel trick was debunked over a month ago. It does nothing but warp the PCB to help the solderballs make contact. Same with the hot air gun. Its not a fix, but a temp solution for another weeks life of your 360. The heat generated by the towel trick and the hotair gun will not reflow the solder, its just not hot enough.
