When I first signed up with this ISP a couple of years ago, I thought they were great but ever since their Evolution options, I have not not been happy with them. Within the last few months I have been restricted to blazingly fast 30kbps NNTP speeds when it should be and used to be 2mbps. I am constantly emailing their technical support department and they have told me they have a problem and are working on it but my patience is fast running out. After spending the last hour on the adsl guide website, I have been reading a lot of bad comments and opinions from their customers. I have also been reading good things about an ISP called Merula and another called Zen. Tomorrorw I will be making enquiries with them with the increasing intentions of leaving Eclipse.

http://www.merula.net/
Reading this has pretty much made up my mind and I dont mind paying that bit extra for a truly unlimited and uncapped service.

Here is a list of email responses I have had from the technical support at Eclipse within the last 2 weeks

I posted on adslguide too and someone replied ...

WAY too namby pamby for Eclipse to take you seriously.
Tell them to get their finger out and uncap you today, or you want your MAC.
As long as listen to their flannel you'll never get anywhere. |

This morning at around 4am I had speeds the like of which I have never had before! It is usually around 4.2MBps but I was on a constant 5.2MBps which totally amazed me!
http://pix.nofrag.com/0d/3a/f4a2b3bc1787dd5295047c66f5f2.html
Currently I have about 200KBps which isnt too bad for the daytime. Its an improvement on 30KBps!
There may be hope yet! I will stick with it!

i know how you feel headshot , i was with eclipse for 2 years until the " Evolution" process.
i was getting awful speeds sometimes as low as 10kbs night and day.
I have since migrated from them, I also know 3 other peiple who was on eclipse who have since migrated.
Its a shame becasue b4 the regrade they was a really good provider and excelent customer support , i guess it was a case of they got bigger and attracted more custom and forgot the core values.
Good luck with it anyways and hope they work it out for you.

Ok well Ive done it! The MAC has been requested!
Should be with me within 5 working days.
They sent me a migration form ...
3. MY REASON FOR MIGRATION IS: (e.g. price, support, product etc) There have been a lot of speed and bandwith issues that I have been getting concerned about and after communicating with your technical support department they have admitted this and have explained the situation and I appreciate their efforts to find a resolution but it was this that caused me to seek out and enquire about alternative ISPs at which point I came across Merula, who for extra cost can offer me unrestricted, uncapped and unlimited adsl.
REASON / COMMENTS: I have been using Eclipse as my ISP for quite a while now and up until recently but mainly since the Evolution options you have served me well and as a valued customer, I thank you for that. It is just unfortunate that I now have to move on since your services no longer meet my requirements.
If they can match what Merula are offering, I will be prepared to stay but somehow I dont think it will happen!
May the NFOrce be with you always.

Just an update ...
Eclipse sent me an e-mail regarding the slow speeds I have been reporting to them, which was about 2 weeks ago now and I havent heard anything about it from them since ...
| Eclipse wrote: | Please can you advise if you are still receiving slow speeds, currently we can't see any thing wrong with your connection. You seem to be advising that the main issue was with the Eclipse traffic management policy that effected your NNTP downloads. Currently everything is working correctly with our service, please can you advise if you still have issues.
Kind Regards,
Technical Support |
and my reply ...
Yes I still have issues but I wouldnt be so concerned about them much longer if I were you. I have requested my MAC and an alternative ISP has taken my order and I will be migrating over this weekend. If you goto adslguide.org and read the comments people are posting about speeds on the Eclipse message board, you will see for yourself the issues I and many others are experiencing.
My NNTP transfer rates are HORRENDOUS until some time after midnight. I am currently connected at 80 Kbps which is approximate 12 KBps. This is just over twice my dial up connection. It used to be connected at 2mb which is approximately 220 KBps. Then it went to 30 KBps and now towards the end of the afternoon its half that! Eclipse has been a good ISP to me for several years and I am sorry but this service is not good enough and you will continue to lose custom should you not rectify the situation.
May the NFOrce be with you always.

I know how you feel.
I notice speeds drop (traffic control) everytime they seem to implement some new faster package. It worked on me, I pay an extra $10/month. Now they brought out another new package that is 2 times as expensive as the one I have, I haven’t notices my speeds dropping but now my service is intermittent. It is down all the time. Apparently they are working on it but I don’t trust the tech help. “they are working on the lines” is a canned answer and they have denied to me that do any form of traffic shaping which is bullshit.
I am getting one month for free tho because the service has been so bad. Origional my service was called unlimited too.

Shaw Communications Inc., a large Canadian cable operator, has been using technology purchased from Ellacoya to manage its broadband network for about one year, says Shaw's president, Peter Bissonnette.
During some periods of peak usage, video file-sharing traffic is slowed to provide more bandwidth for subscribers accessing email, Web pages and other uses. "We try to manage those people who are avariciously using up spectrum," he says.
Shaw also uses the network management technology to increase revenue. For example, customers who use Vonage or another Internet phone service can pay an additional $9.95 a month to make sure that their calls get higher priority on the network than some other uses. |

Unless there are some other reasons I am unaware of, all the high demand for fast, uncapped, unlimited and non-traffic shaped bandwith is for piracy related purposes whether it is music, games, software or movies. Browsing, online gaming, e-mail, chatting and the other reasons people use the internet for can all be done using very little bandwith in comparison. Please anyone correct me if I am wrong.

I think piracy is probably no.1
Even still tho lots of p2p is used for legal content too. Like Wow updates. Also I think some ISP block voip, some have disabled skype because of bandwidth issues. People want to be able to share family videos. That is what I have been reading.
It is just very shady. They want to traffic control fine but don’t lie about it. As a consumer I just want to know my options so I can make the best choice knowing some facts.
My girlfriends husband does tech support, I might ask him about it later.
