All right so i've ordered a new box which i intend to use mainly for gaming, surfing and possibly some moviewatching. And it hit me that i've been using pretty much the same software for quite a long time. So i thought id ask for some advice on good replacements that, preferrably, dont sit in the background and use up too much of that precious memory- and processor-power.

So here is my list of what i am using today.

OS: Windows XP SP2
My view on current program: Reason im even posting WinXP is that im considering using WinXP Media Center (for XBOX360 compability), or maybe even Vista? Is Visa viable yet?

Firewall and general program-protection: ZoneAlarm Pro
My view on current program: Works very well from what i can tell. Really need a firewall because my ip-range is constantly hammered.

Antivirus: Norton SystemWorks 2005
My view on current program: Decent enough with the "free" liveupdate. But generally i dislike it, seems to take up alot of power but i might be mistaken.

Videoviewer: MPlayer
My view on current program: Love it, plays pretty much anything

Musicplayer: Winamp
My view on current program: Not much to say about it, works well.

Misc: PowerStrip
My view on current program: Cant live without it, but maybe there are better programs like it?

Browser: Firefox
My view on current program: Feels safer than IE but im sure that's just superstition.

I use alot of other programs as well, such as Office etc but the ones i posted are the ones i use on a everyday basis.

So what im looking for is, as i said, some advice on good replacements, and id love to hear if you think i should get something else that is making your life easier Smile

I would say ..

Windows XP SP2 with MCE as its X360 stuff is useful.. or linux (haha) Wink..
Replace MPlayer and every codec with VLC.
Replace ZoneAlarm with a router based firewall, then you wont need an application at all Razz.
Replace MS Office with OpenOffice.

Here is the list of what i use. I can't guarantee that they are the best, but they work great for me

Antivirus: NOD32 you can't find any anti virus lighter than this one. And it works like a dream.
Firewall: Kerio Personal Firewall
Video player: Media Player Classic. I've been using this one for god knows how long. May be i need a new video player.
Music player: WMP 11 Razz
Internet Browser: FireFox 2.0. DownThemAll plugin is great btw, no extra download manager needed
Office 2007. It works great so far, I dont really like the new fancy interface tho. I've been looking to try OpenOffice, but not sure if it's compatible with .doc files(which i have too many).

Sig too big.
