I work in a computer store and I have been asked to look into setting up a wireless hotspot where people can come into our premises and use the internet wirelessly with their laptops. I have a vague idea how I can do this but I was hoping for some assistance from the more knowledgeable people here.

Im going to need a wireless adsl router with a decent range and probably one with a 125mbps wireless transfer rate, unless something even faster is available. The thing is we dont want everyone to be able to jump onto our connection so it will have to be secured and here's where I get a bit stuck.

I assume it will use a wireless encryption privacy key for security but how can I give access to certain individuals? We will be charging for the service with some kind of hourly fee I think but that has yet to be decided. How can I allow access to the wireless hotspot for one individual for a set period of time then once their time is up, prevent them using it afterwards?

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated and if anyone can suggest any decent wireless routers that I can look at purchasing that would be great too!

Thanks in advance!

125mbps = N? Most people wont have support for this speed, so it may be pointless.

To allow people access for set periods of time, after providing a payment option your going to need a server attached to the wireless router/AP that handles the IP lease. You will require a user to give a payment option (CC for example) before the server allows them to have an IP.. at which point an IP will be leased for a period of 1 hour (or whatever you like) and will be attached to that persons MAC.. There should be some freeware solution avalible, but I have never used anything but custom software (built by the software guys for the company I used to work for..).. As for security, well its a public service so the only security needed would be a WEP key that would be automatically sent to the user on connection.. the protection would be at the IP lease side of things which means only people with a lease could use the service anyway..
