I wasnt quite sure where to put this! I guess it would fit a networking zone best but since there isnt one, here should be ok! Any moderators feel free to move it if necessary.

Ok my problem ...

I dont know a great deal about networking but I know some bits which is why I am asking for help.

Basically I have 2 XP Home machines connected to a Netgear wireless adsl router modem. One is a desktop pc which is wired and the other is a laptop which is connected wirelessly. I have created a secure connection for the wireless and both are able to access the internet via the wireless adsl router modem.

My problem is networking the desktop and the laptop to enable file sharing between them but also to be able to print wirelessly from the laptop to the Epson CX5200 printer which is connected to the desktop pc. I turn off all firewalls and I run the network wizard on both machines ensuring the workgroups are identical and set up sharing.

Both machines can ping the router and both machines can ping each other, although it does time out occassionally but that could be down to the wireless signal. In Network Places, the desktop machine can see itself but not the laptop and the laptop can see itself and the desktop. When I try to access the desktop from the laptop I get network path not found error.

Obviously I need to be able to see both network computers on both machines for it to work but for the life of me I dont know why one can see both but the other can only see itself?! I thought it might be the router but Im fairly convinced thats not to blame! I have spent hours on this, trawling through forums, websites and googling and I still have no answer.

Please anyone! Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you ping each other? Have you tried browsing to the IP? how about browsing to the machine name? Network Places is not always reliable.

Both could ping the router and both could ping each other when I set it up the first time but the responses were request timed out every now and then from both machines, which is probably due to the reliability of the wireless connection?

Update:

Ok I tried running the laptop with a lan cable to the router instead of wirelessly and set up the network again and I actually got somewhere! Both machines could see themselves and each other in network places and the shared printer appeared too even though it wasnt connected at the time! There did seem to be a delay of 30-60 seconds when accessing the networked computers which Im not sure is normal. So if I am able to set up the network and run the laptop wired, why am I getting issues wirelessly? I will attempt to set it up wirelessly tomorrow and try again. Thanks for the replies so far!
