well i still say when they came out, the ja games had decent graphics. but at any rate they made up for it in some of the most kick-ass game voiceovers of all time. anyways i figure if the engine is as good or better than silent storm(an example of turn-based going 3d perfectly), as well as good-to-excellent voice acting, they will have a winner on their hands. time will tell though.
and hey if one turn-based franchise can make a decent comeback, why cant another *ahem* fallout *ahem*.

When the games came out the gfx were fine, imo. Looking forward to this. I hope they stay true to the game and its background.

We've yet to see how this comeback turns out, remember. Although I have faith that Russians can do this right, I have no faith at all in humanity in general. This can be screwed up, and royally at that ;) Still, though, I'd like to see the nearly-complete Fallout 3 see the light of day...fucking Interplay. They need to die painfully for their sins against gamers.

Are you sure it's the same Dev? Paradise Cracked was pure shit, I hope they won't screw it up, or worse use Paradise engine for this game.

Yes.. i'm sure..
taken from Gameshell news:
"MiST Land South, Game Factory Interactive's Russian studio, will be assigned the job of developping Jagged Alliance 3D......"
and from "Paradise Cracked" Gamespot review:
"That's the kindest way to sum up Paradise Cracked, a turn-based strategy game in the tradition of X-COM from Russian developer Mist Land."

new info:
http://www.rpgcodex.com/index.php#2513
Quote: | JA3D will use an updated graphical engine of Alfa: Antiterror, MISTland's other tactical game. However, AI and other game logic will be developed from scratch.
The project leader will be Yaroslav Astakhov, who is also the project leader for Alfa.
Tactical features of JA2, such as movement, shooting, concealment, etc., will be preserved and even expanded.
JA3D will not be turn-based outside combat like Paradise Cracked
The weapons list will be expanded compared to UB. More heavy weapons are promised, but sci-fi weapons, like rocket rifles, are not planned.
Strategy First has considerable creative control over the project
The emphasis of this project will be on great looks and entertainment, as opposed to being aimed at the most hard-core fans (Wildfire was cited as an example of the latter).

it doesn't sounds bad...
here you can look at ALFA: Antiterror

If they released it on console first it would be an instagib for sure. Lets see a good port... other than KOTOR and MAYBE i wont doubt all ports.

Even a good port is still limited by the weak technology of the console. You can't possibly have a complicated strategy game on a console.

Shit though, that statement about entertainment and not aimed at hardcore fans has me at a loss... why pick up a franchise if you arent going to give the hardcore JA fans what they crave? Who are the ones who will be driving the sales anyways..
Now I am also beginning to be a bit skeptical of their plans..
Hopefully, wishfully, mercifully, this wont be a repeat of...dare i say it...the ufo: aftermath travesty? where turn-based strategy was scrapped for 'entertainment' purposes as well...
well if greedy devs/pubs screw this one up, theres gonna be some blood to spill...
I know most JA 'hardcore fans' i talk to are very much gun-enthusiasts and ex-military...So strategy first better behave with this one...
or else..
However, I did like the part about no sci-fi weapons. One of my only pet-peeves with Silent Storm, brilliant game that it was, was that the laser weapons and whatnot dominated the game in the end and took away the authentic feel everything else had. Same with the rocket rifles in JA2, to a lesser extent.

Ps: Silent Storm was real nice, but I hated those sci-fi robots and that kind of stupidities...

Quote: | Hi all, too many questions at the same time! Yes I am directly involved in this project. I have even had some involvement in the original game and have known Ian since then.
1-2 year(s) development for this game makes no sense. We are not talking about a simple sequel or add on. 2.5-3 years makes more sense.
The turn based system has to be retained and improved. There might be some evolution on the tactical side of things to allow a more fluid and engaging multiplayer experience, which is something that Me and others are looking at currently.
So, when can this be bought? When it's ready. There is no set date as we are way too early in the process.
At this point, all I can say beyond this is that there are 2 games being worked on that are related to the JA franchise.
Nothing to worry about DiAnna. This tactical system evolution would be more a multiplayer related mode of play.
There is a problem when considering multiplayer for turn base systems. This problem is the amount of time that it takes before it is your turn again. If we are to have a multiplayer mode for JA3, something has to be done about that. Same for Disciples.
This being said, dumbing down the single player tactical system to support variations for multiplayer gaming is out of the question. Adding options on how the multiplayer is dealt with is a must though.
Consider just this possibility:
An additional initiative factor based on certain stats, the amount of unused movement points in the previous turn and the health state of a merc or player character could be used to create an initiative based 'unit turn' instead of a 'whole team turn' in multiplayer. This is an example of how you can cut down on the impression of down time a player must support while waiting for his turn, since everybody gets to play more often but for shorter periods. (In other words, all units get 'their' turn and not necessarily all at the same time as opposed to a player getting 'his' turn and moving all his units around in that turn). One advantage of such a system is that the order of initiative in the turn (who gets to play in which order) is variable in that it depends on units being injured or not or having saved their moves or not. (Saving your movement points would give you initiative points for the next turn unless they were used up during an interrupt sequence).
There is also the possibility of having a timer option in multiplayer so that every unit has a certain amount of time to decide what he will do.
There are also more possibilities. The idea is to get an optional set of rules that would be available for multiplayer purposes and let the players decide if they want to play that way or if they prefer playing the way they were used to.
About other remarks, well I don't understand why people would be against having options if the game does not disallow playing with the classic rules.
Btw again, these possible options are not there to replace the single player gameplay, they are there to enhance multiplayer. |
sorry, long quote, but right from the horses mouth, Richard Therrien, a VP of SF who will be directly overseeing development of both games. He posted this reply in the official forums. This puts me a bit at easy as far as the game mechanics go. Don't know how exactly the MP component will go, but seems like they realize the basic formula behind JA in the SP mode shouldn't be touched. Also knowing someone close to Ian is working on the project puts me more at ease. Though it would be awesome if the whole former sir-tech team were to get hired on the project, especially Shaun Lyng, who worked with the Silent Storm team.. but all in all, sounds promising, if only it weren't so far away.. it's gonna be a long 3 yrs of waiting patiently...
