imho nothing beats a good software router- grab an old pc (100mhz) with a few megs of Ram (32,64) , 2 network 100mbit cards and use IP-COP. It's a linux based router software capable of all features you can imagine and most easy to handle.
Alternatively you could install vmware/virutal server 2005/virtual PC 2004 on your PC and plug in two more Lan cards especially for the use of ip-cop in your client system. Install ip-cop on your virutal machine and mount the 2 lan cards within virutal server to solely be used by ipcop in the virutal hardware device configuration. Then you plug 2 cat5 cables in each lan card and connect one (green interface-> LAN ) to a 100mbit switch and the other one to your dsl modem (red interface ->WAN). The network connection used by your "real" operating system must be handled by a seperate lan card. So you need to have 3 network cards at least in your pc to setup your virual software router successfully.(don't wanna discuss shared connections) The windows network connection lan cable needs to be plugged into the switch like the green interface connection from your virutal ip-cop server.
If you handle all steps right you will be able to use your pc as a client of your virtual server ip-cop running on the same machine. It works greath with bitorrent and any other application, takes minamal system recources and is far superior to any hardwarerouter on the market; even the ones that allow the user to increase the number of max connections. You would have superb firewall settings and the best user friendly vpn (supports also net to net, not only road warrior vpn connections!) A big point is also the possibility to make a backup of your virual machine once it's installed. You can use the backup with any system (if you intend to upgrade your hardware components) You'd just have to mount your lan cards used for ipcop in the virual system hardware settings and everything is fine.
Consider this a good alternative. You could also use a stand alone pc like i mentioned above

Had a Belkin, worked just fine, and easy to setup, but not very compatible with xbox live. Bought a linksys, and it the best i ever tryed, fast, never goes down, and easy to use.
