Answers to common questions
- My fans are sounding terrible! What can I do? Can I clean the crap with my vacuum cleaner? I'm bashing my case but It doesn't help
.
1. Whatever you do you should NOT bash your case or stop the fans with fingers, tops or whatever you got. It may stop the problem temporarily but it can damage your internal components especially touch the fans with ex a tops. It will make them sound even worse.
2. Buy compressed air on a can if you don't have any and clean the sucker from all ways and remove all the crap/dust. At the same time you could clean the rest. A vacuum cleaner should not be used on components and especially not on fans but when you have blowed of all the dust with the can you can use the cleaner to remove all the dust/crap from the bottom of the case. It shouldn't be dangerous.
3. Remove the plastic sticker on the fan/s and insert a bit of padlock oil. Before you apply the sticker again, remove all the oil that is present around the whole and apply the sticker. If it still doesn't apply, remove the adhesive with your fingers and glue it.
- My computer just dies sometimes. I've checked the drivers and installed all the updates for my OS. What could the causes be?
1. Old BIOS. Visit the manufacturer of your main board and check for an updated BIOS file then flash the mobo.
2. Temps. Check the temps in your motherboard's health section and if they are too high there are many things you could do; buy a new fan, switch to watercooling, get an airy aluminium case, buy more case fans, mod your case, apply better thermal paste to the CPU/GPU/NB and so on.
3. If you've checked the two above it could be your PSU that is a very cheapo model, damaged or it could be to weak (watts). I would first check the voltage meters in voltages section of your BIOS and see if anything looks spooky. If it does I would try another PSU preferrable a high quality one like Ocz or Antec.
- I suspect that my harddrive is failing because It's acting very weird. Is there anything I can do?
Yes. Download one of these apps corresponding to your brand and test your drive.
IBM/Hitachi - Drive Fitness Test
Maxtor - PowerMax
Western Digital - DLGDiag
Seagate - SeaTools
Fujitsu - Diagnostic Tool
Samsung - HUTIL
- I want to check out if my memory banks and harddrives are working as they should before I install any OS. Are there any utils you could put on a floppy?
Forget floppys! Those are history! Download UltimateBootCD which contains several diagnostic utilities HERE.

Also wondering what happened. Maybe we could make a big Hardware faq thread? Not only for videocards.

Thanks. I'll fix the rest tomorrow. Currently the "Recommmend resellers" thread is in strong need of recommendations, specially other than US and Sweden.

Ok, here is a question. What is the name of the thing(on mother boards, 478) that holds the heatsink for the CPU?

I was more thinking about common problems like "Why is my computer rebooting without any BSOD when I'm playing games?", and so on.

We need some tips about popular chipsets. The only specific ones I can think of are nforce2, nforce3 and nforce4. Then we have SIS and VIA ones but I don't know which are popular.
edit:
Alternatively I'll just link generally to the manufacturers. BTW, I added the changelog to the ati xp/2000 driver. Gonna find the rest of them. Now I'm gonna try the newly released 5.3 driver.

Personally I like http://www.hardocp.com/ I've followed some of their advice on more than a few PC builds. Alittle commercialized now, but still good.
