EDIT:

I work for a small computer shop and I am currently updating our custom build specification. In the past we have always used AMD processors but I am now considering Intel. I have heard the Celerons are pretty crap but their clock speeds are far superior to the AMD 754 alternatives and its the clock speeds the average customer looks at. Its difficult to promote the AMD CPUs since the clock speeds are to be honest pretty unnattractive when compared to the Intel range.

Also how come the 754 Sempron processors have clock speeds slower than the socket A Athlons? The clock speed on a socket A 2800 Athlon is 2000mhz but 2800 754 is only 1600mhz! Arent these things supposed to get better and faster not slower as technology progresses!?

It makes no sense!?!

I guess you know nothing of engineering. Chips speeds are meaningless unless theyre the same design. The 2.2ghz Athlon64 (even 754) is so much faster than a 3.2ghz P4. Chip architecture is what matters and AMD are more efficient. They're the better company. They know what they're doing when it comes to creating a gaming processor. Intel can have their workstation processing.

lol no I know nothing of engineering and I understand what you are saying but if the chips are different then you're saying you cant compare them or there is no point comparing them? For the customers who know nothing whatsoever about AMD and Intel processors, I think explaining that will be futile as they will look at the clock speeds and if the Sempron is slower than the Celeron, then they will go for the Celeron.

Then again, isnt it your job to set them straight?

The whole GhZ war is long over, and AMD cpu's can do much more at lower clock cycles than intel cpu's. If you compare them, the amd works at lower cycles but perform just as fast or often better then a intel cpu at a higher clock rate. This makes the amd cpu run cooler and much less energy consuming. An amd athlon 64 3200+ is as fast or faster then a intel @ 3,4ghz depending on what you do with it. Intel cpus is better for editing movies and music and such and amd totaly pwns i games.
Ask your customers what they are gong to use their comps for and take it from there!

I feel your pain headshot. I dont own a store, but i do build and sell customs on a fairly stable basis. Its hard to explain to first time buyers why AMD is better for them then Intel, especially when they didn't even hear the word "AMD" before.

ps. are you the headshot that I used to own in Iron Toe dojo? =). If yes how come you dont play anymore?

Thanks for that. 'The whole GhZ war is long over' will be a great starting point for explaining the situation to my customers!

Its nice to know there are others who feel my pain Smile

ps. lol wtf is Iron Toe dojo?!
As for the headshot you used to play, I would think he is sick and tired of being owned lol
I think that response answers your question Wink

Sorry for coming off as an ass, wasn't my intention.

Do your best to compare it to something theyre familliar with. For instance a car. Say you've got 2 cars, one with 400 horsepower, and another with 300 horsepower. The 400 horsepower car weighs the same as a feather and has no torque, and the 300 horsepower car has plenty of torque and has been weight balanced, which would win in a race?

That was the fist analogy that popped into my head.

heres a good test of recent cpu's in games http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/cpu-games2.html
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/28cpu-games.html and that to
shows how much better amd's are for gaming

some non gaming performance comparissons , with similarly priced amd and intel cpu's

http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/processorsmemory/0,39024015,39164010-2,00.htm

intels will perform better in video encoding

...Neither do I... But I took science in 6th grade...

DAMNIT, why do i always come off as such an asshole. Also, I've worked in computer sales, comparing them to things people already know a lot about works wonders.

lol you cracked me up! I really expected to get a lot of flack for not knowing about the cars analogy! I also noticed at the end of your second post you put 'fist analogy'! Could be my state of mind but that is dodgy! Laughing
