Well it will be rare that anyone on here has compared the two. However if you dive over to hard ocp, they may have some comparisons.

More stable. Nah. I would only buy AMD myself. Cheaper and more for your cash.

Go with the athlon CPU, its also compatible with a future os like Vista or the 64bit version of Windows. and should be quite fast.

amd 64 for gaming , p4 cant compete in games even with higher clocks. try and get one of the skt 939 opterons its basically a dirt cheap san diego a64 with 1mb cache , even better for gaming and can be had for the same price as a a64 3000

I would get the Intel.

Not that I dislike AMD (I have an ADM64 system atm) i just always get Intel if I can afford it.

if your prepared to spend that much on a 550 p4 why not spend some more on a a64 you can get a 3500 for less then a 550 p4 , and they dont run as hot as p4's either

The 550 will give better performance than the AMD3000 simple as that. If you got a AMD3400 you would probably find it the other way around.

Ignore that, its utter rubish. Intel and Microsoft have a strong partnership and work together to make sure ALL CPU's will be fully compatible with they're arc's (Intel make the arc's, don't forget that Razz). Plus the 550 is EM64 and has the same features (pretty much) as the AMD64 range.

Intel® Extended Memory 64 TechnologyΦ (Intel® EM64T) enables
64-bit computing on the server/workstation and desktop platforms when combined with supporting software. Intel EM64T improves performance by allowing the system to address more than 4 GB of both virtual and physical memory. Intel EM64T provides support for:

- 64-bit flat virtual address space
- 64-bit pointers
- 64-bit wide general purpose registers
- 64-bit integer support
- Up to 1 terabyte (TB) of platform address space

AMD - Better for FPS performance
Intel - better for multiple applications and media work (video editing/encoding)

Naw, but I would expect the AMD to beat the Intel chip in the FPS stakes at that "matched" spec.

Hope my post didnt seem mean, didnt mean it to come out like it did having re-read it, it sounds very harsh.. sorrryy Smile!

Looks old to me, doesnt have the new AMD/Intel cores - Only has 478 socket/northwood and Newcastle cores (except for the prescot extreme editions, although they're also 478socket rather than 775).

@jigsaw
you really don't need that kind of pc, believe me; go and configure yoursef an individual system. It's not that difficult as it might look in the first place- Get a screwdriver and it takes you 30 minutes to build it up completely. I'd recommend the following components for a gaming desktop:

A64 Opteron 3000 or 3200- able to work up to 700mhz above default clocks ~140€
dfi ultra-d mainboard Nforce4 Ultra ~120€
Tagan 480 W power supply ~80€
2x1024 Mb OCZ cl2 memory kit ~230€
7800 Ultra or GT graphics card ~430€/ ~330€
Thermalright XP120 with 120 papst fan ~55€

hard drive s-ata II & burner by choice
Soundblaster Creative 2 ZS ~45€

If you'd go with this you would have a fine gaming machine. My system is very similar Wink

HP Pavilion M7270

AMD Athlon™ XP 3400+/64 bit Processor - This would be fine
Memory : 1 GB - This should be ok too
Harddisk :250 GB S-ATA Harddisk with space for to extend PMD - Up to you, I would use more
CD-ROM/DVD : DVD+/-R/+/-RW Lightscribe Double Layer - Fine, again up to you
Vdeo Card : 256 MB ATI Radeon X600 - This needs upgrading, its not a great card
Poorten : 7x USB 2.0
Network Card 10/100 Mbps & draadloos LAN
CD/DVD-Rewriter : 16x DVD-ROM
FireWire 2 x IEEE 1394
9-in-1 Cardreader - The above are all ok
Control System : Windows© Media Center - Not really needed, XP Prof would be better, you can install that later though

i wouldnt get it if you ever plan to upgrade.

the 3400+ is a socket 754 which already is an old socket , and wouldnt offer you a future processor upgrade path.

also the x600 is crap to , i have a x700 pro and its just about playable for games with medium detail

although I bought a clawhammer AMD 3400+ though socket 754 and it shows better benchmarks compared to the 3500+
but I would recommende the socket 939.

That looks pretty ok. I would consider finding a better gfxcard (x800 or 6600 with 256mb) though and get the SB X-FI soundcard instead of the one you have now.

Gaming - Intel Quad Q9450 @ 3.2GHZ | Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB | SB X-Fi | PC6400 8GB | 300GB Velociraptor
HTPC - Antec Fusion Remote | AMD Athlon 7850 X2 | PC6400 2GB | 74GB Raptor
Server - Athlon 64 X2 4200+ | Radeon HD 3450 | SB X-Fi | PC5300 2GB | 4TB+ total space

AMD is by far alot better processor then pentium ever was or be, its like comparing ford and a ferarri.
Pentium is overpriced, AMD is priced right and outperformes pentium without and problems.

Pentium is better
on most benchmarks P4 scores higher than AMD on most categories
and when AMD does score higher - its a little higher, while on some categories P4 scores alot higher.

And if your'e taking AMD for the 64bit support, you can buy the P4 650 which is basicly the 550 only 64bit and 2MB cache(and according to newegg its actually cheaper than the 550)

I think the hype about AMD is that its cheap and its good, just not better
