I've been out of the hardware loop for so long... is anyone 'in the know'?
Intel or AMD?
Nvidia or ATI?
And what are the good sites lately that trash this or that and put one or the other on a high pedestal?
Doing a major purchase soon, don't want to mess this one up!

Got a pretty hefty pile of cash set aside, not a huge problem, just need to know what to spend it on.
And I am not real sure what reviews are reputable these days.
Sounds like AMD and Nvidia are the way to go though?

From the info I have on CPU's AMD are the way to go for all out power, plus value to money. But depending on your uses you may find the intel chips give you more of what you need. AMD performs well on one single task, gives greater speed (FPS if we're talking about games) and does things generally better. However the Intel chips do perform better at multiple tasks, they based the chip design around the ability to do more than one job well, rather than one job amazingly well. So I guess its down to what you want to do.
I belive Toms Hardware done a bentchmark a few months back with the dual core chips which showed this to be the case.
I would say though, that dual core technology is a little pricey right now, you might want to cheap out on a decent none dual core chip and wait for prices and technology to improve. As for the Nvidia / ATI argument, I think everyone agree's that Nvidia's cards are the more powerful and have the most backing..

get a opteron 165 , dual core with 2mb of cache and cheaper then a x2 64 3800 which only has 1mb of cache.
if you have a hefty pile of cash though get a fx57 or x2 4800
