PostPosted: Fri, 5th Aug 2005 23:46    Post subject: Countries
Here's what you do here:

1. Write from which country you are from.
2. Write about a thing that appears in your country (and is quite popular there) but does not in the other countries.
3. Write about a thing like this in other country that you do not understand.
4. If someone didn't understand something about your country (in point number 3.), you try to explain that to him.

Here's mine:

1.I'm from Poland.
2.We have a variety of food types that do not appear anywhere else (bigos, oscypek, etc.) and we are very proud of them (not that I am). The Poles in the EU Parlament (or whatever it's called) are trying to add something like a copyright mark to them (I'm writing about oscypek at the moment) Wink. I mean - they try to tell the other countries to fuck off ("you will not try to make oscypek!").
3.I don't uderstand the China-Camera thing. I mean - All Chinese people have cameras and make photos of everything. I can't understand that. Sorry.
4.All's clear for now Smile

About Hitman: Movie (2007)
Vin Diesel is a hardcore gamer, and absolutely loves the Hitman series. For that reason I have faith that he wont destroy the movie.

Response: Well, Uwe Boll probably loved the Alone in the Dark games.

there are jokes about the English shyness throughout the world ..

For example when in Quebec .. I learned of the classic coffee shop game called spot the Englishmen .. watch passers by till you see two people who are likely to be an English person & a Quebecer finding out directions whatever ..

the joke is .. the one who is always taking a step back shying away looking around uncomfortably is usually the Englishman, the one stepping closer smiling unconcerned is usually the Quebecer ..

I've heard from many folks who come to England that the English are very miserable looking & don’t smile @ you when you smile @ them in the street .. not everyone who is English, but on the whole we English are quite reserved & suspicious of overly friendly folks .. IMO

I tried to think of a national characteristic, rather than some food or drink specifically English.

I would like to hear more about national characteristics than local food & drink. I can google food & drink specific to a nation but personal views are harder to come by.

Question.
Why do most of the people call Estonians slow. (I'm not insulting or anything, I'm just asking) Like in KVN (you should know what's that), everyone are making jokes about Estonians being slow.
Are you guys really that slow in Estonia ? What's up ? Surprised

@fisk
Stupid generalization, no comment.

@SoSBigperm
Not sure, we like to cover everything, and we really like being up in people's shit. I personally don't care for celebrity this and that, but America is all about image, and I guess a lot of people like something to look into. No idea about the South, I haven't been there, I'd like to figure it out myself.

@wierd0
Got me there, no clue. A lot of us fight it though, it is pretty retarded.

@poullou
An American life is generally a good life. We don't have a whole lot of pain around here, and we are (arguably) one of the most power military nations. I guess we feel like it's a good idea to play the savior everywhere. If I was in power, I'd be doing the same. I don't want to see countries around the world blasting the shit out of eachother. We want to help. Of course it doesn't always work out, the right idea is there, but sometimes the guys in power are bastards. I never regret the fact we try to help other countries.

Good answer, although things should be the way you described...they don't in many cases. Help is just the candy you(US gov) give to the kids(the rest) to cover your actions. Sadly, some other interests prevail this help...

3. why are americans so patriotic?
4. i guess the whole dubbing thing in german tv comes down to that people never really learned to speak english. the newer generations learn it. but a lot people are really weak in it. so people started to dub movies for eample. quiet a lot people hate subbing here. i don't know why. well luckily dubbing is a serious thing and we got some really great actors doing the dubbing. well there are shit ones too. i prefer the original voices tho.

My worst experience at movies: watching a french movie, dubbed to english with greek subtitles.... Question

A few years ago I went to germany... There was something with the school I was going at and a german school.
Anyway I was living with a german family and one day when we ate dinner the mother asked me a question about The Green Mile (you know the movie with tom hanks and that real big black-skinned man).
She asked me if it were not strange in sweden when the black-skinned man talked swedish!! Shocked
I went fucking insane because, she could not say one single word in english, her daughter translated for her. Then I explained that we (swedes) were smart enough to learn english and watch movies with or without subs as it doesn't even matter in most cases.
She looked at me as if I would've been dumb. Still she needed her daughter to translate... Very Happy

My worst experience? Fresh Prince in Bel Air in german... Or maybe Alien 2 in spanish... Mad

i must admit, i also don't know why germans dub everything they can.
in most cases it sucks. but in some cases,for example all the kids movies (pixar, etc... and all kinds of tv cartoons)...i think for kids it's nice Smile

from time to time there are some special days at the cinema where you can watch movies in the original languages.
and of course dvd's also have the original sound in addition to the german dub.
sometimes, when i've already seen the original version, and then go to the cinema with some friends and hear the german dubbed version it really cracks me up...e.g. sin city...i mean everything sounded so lame Crying or Very sad the once so cool one-liners...now ridiculous Sad

so you're right. it sux. and of course if it wasn't all dubbed, the overall english knowledge of germans would be a lot better.
