| Quote: | HBO is preparing a miniseries based on Stanley Kubrick's research for a film dubbed his "greatest never made film" — a planned story on French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's 19th century struggle to bring Europe under his total control.
True Detective Emmy winner Cary Fukunaga is in talks to direct the mini, which is in development at the premium cable network.
Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will exec produce the project via their Amblin Television banner. |
| Quote: | | If you're not aware, Stanley Kubrick spent a large chunk of the '60s researching this project. He wrote a script, planned a number of elaborate battle sequences (some of which would have included tens of thousands of extras), and amassed close to 20,000 photos of Napoleonic-era ephemera to aid in production design. |

Steven Spielberg Gives An Update On His Series Based On Stanley Kubrick’s Napoleon
Speaking at the Berlin Film Festival, Spielberg offered an update. "With the co-operation of Christiane Kubrick and Jan Harlan, we’re mounting a large production for HBO on based on Stanley’s original script Napoleon. We are working on Napoleon as a seven-part limited series," the director said. Now, of course, we can all go back to waiting for this one.
Following the movie A.I., this is the second time Steven Spielberg is bringing one of directing mentor Stanley Kubrick's lost projects to life. Kubrick had planned making a Napoleon biopic, which would star Jack Nicholson in the title role, but Kubrick did another time-period epic, Barry Lyndon, instead, working with Jack later in The Shining. As of 2023, Jack is currently billed as a cast-member here... most likely a cameo for almost having played the lead, that is, if the cameo happens at all since Nicholson unofficially retired from acting in 2010.
Cary Fukunaga exited this project and Spielberg will direct all 7 episodes.
Dajum. This is like waiting for Daikatana
