I've seen some people propose that it's a publicity stunt. I don't believe that at all. Neither of them need any publicity, they're not trying to get back into the limelight (unlike all the desperate bitches that flashed their pussies when they climbed out of limos with back seats that were so low that you could nearly see their assholes). Besides, this is definitely not the kind of publicity Smith needed.
Besides, Will Smith is one of those celebrities that has a massive ego and tend to be arrogant except when he's doing an interview (which he controls through the people that work for him to prepare the interviewer etc.) at which point he seems like marys little lamb.
It's just entertainment for the masses. He had to assert his male macho dominance publically since he probably thought he'd look like a wuss letting Chris Rock make a joke of Jada's hairloss problem.
Stupid and silly. I'm not sure why I even bother writing this. I guess it's because I think Will Smith pretty much dropped to the bottom 10% dregs of Hollywood actors exposing their true personality.

It's silly yes, but a major celebrity actor walking up to the Oscar stage and slapping the shit out of a presenter (who also happens to be a comedian known for making roasting jokes) live in front of all the world is unique. Compare this to Ricky Gervais doing his hilarious Golden Globe roasting sessions that really burns the actors live with jokes that expose some seriously embarrassing and insulting factgs that happens to expose or touch some sensitive nerves by also having a lot of truth, making fun of their quirks in live tv.

The point is that it's a publicity stunt for the Oscars (that have lost a lot of steam with the years/decades), not for the actors involved.
But yeah, IMO it was very real, and also very ridiculous.
