My mother is restoring her gmail account every couple of months.
Now they want to activate 2FA for her account, and she cannot wrap her head around the concept.
Is this us, in 40 years into the future? Some new tech that is so foreign to us that we can't grasp it?

Of course. It's already happening for me for certain things, i just can't be bothered with it, i'm also getting more stubborn. I hate re-learning what has already worked for ages and is sufficient for my needs.

I don't know, and she can't get me a straight answer - she claims her password changes
one of my emails is her recovery email and I don't get notifications that her password was changed
so I think she forgets it, or enters it incorrectly in a different language layout or something

@StrEagle: Have I told you about my demented adoptive father?
He died September 2017. The last 5 years of his live I could stand his company.
Edit: I meant to say: "I couldn't stand his company."
The real bad days:
- Several times during those years, I had to guess his password for an e-mail account. He had two accounts to separate personal and hobby. Of course he didn't write things down, or he forgot where the piece of paper with notes were.
- He overfed his cat, since he couldn't remember when he fed her the last time. The cat then used to puke all over the place, more work for the cleaning lady.
- His bank at some point refused to renew his card, since it lasted perhaps for a day, and then he would forget the PIN code.
- At some point his driver licence was cancelled, and of course in his mind this was completely unfair: "The police here were all against him." After that he started to hide his car in nearby streets. Several times the neighbours had to help him to find his car back. This went on until the police caught him for the 3rd time driving without licence. He was lucky that they only confiscated his car.
I could go on for hours, but it takes too time much to write it all down in understandable English.

if i died right now, nobody would be able to acces my 2 phones /laptop , mail, socials , my two steam, my two epics, humblebundle, my mmos , all would go poof and they have a 4digit + value each on purchases/time spent
maybe this is a hole in the market, a online cloud when u die or get incapaciated u send an email to people with all this details
with a trigger function if u havent replied or pushed some button in a years time of last one, it goed automaticly to the friends u listed in this "freemium" service
if u friends dont reply, the service sells/keeps the gaming stuff n destroys the data n accounts
the annoying thing will be password changes updates but people are so lazy they barely do it
steam made it no secret that when u die its done, they dont want to give it to next of kin or with great reluctance https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-10-06-what-happens-to-your-steam-account-when-you-die

This is a bullshit thread.
You should have put it under bitching session and even there it's wrongly titled.
Has nothing to do with the future and shit. You baited me here.
What does it have to do with the future if your mom can't remember her password?
Let me tell you something about the future:
My parents received a letter that says "please scan the QR code, goto the website, fill out the electricity information from your eletro box and submit your readings online".
Starting from this year. Previosly, in the same letter there was a form and another envelope for filling it out per hand and sending it back - the mail was paid by the energy company itself.
Now THAT is a case for the future we'll find ourselves in.
My parents are too old fashioned to handle this. I see myself getting involved every time something like this comes up.
It's a true dick-move for profit, and the best is they don't admit it's a cost cutting thing.
They say it's to cut carbon footprint by reducing the paper costs for the letter.
Written in the letter they received.
I demand an apologia from you, and a renaming of this thread, and a move to the void! |
This is not a bitching thread.
It's more of a reality check - will I turn out as my parents?
Is their confusion about technology my inevitable future?
I already feel the pressure of cars with automatic transmissions - many vendors stopped offering models with manuals.
or are we immune to this confusion?
Tech in their younger life didn't change as much as it does in our youth.
Maybe we are more adaptable to such changes, as we grew around them.

If in human-machine interface evolve and suddenly your smartphone could be mind-controlled, then yes, probably we'd be fucked and your next 10 year old could pwn you with controlling your own phone.
I think that if however, the interfaces stay the same with keyboard/mouse, touch screens, and maybe even VR, we should be fine.

I will try to adapt to anything, at least until my rusty body and brain will be capable of functioning properly...or until I will have served my purpose after which I'll be slowly dumped into the lava pool.
