No matter where I go on the net, they are now omnipresent, not matter the plateform.
It's now a word that's used globally.
But what is it? The Larousse, the French reference, defines it as such (I translated it from French, but I think I've been 1:1):
"Concept (text, image, video) spread massively, customized and transformed on the Internet
in an often parodic way, which spreads very quickly, thus creating a buzz. "
I have another:
"Concept (text, image, video) that speaks to entire cultural groups to most of the online world, despite of socio-political differences."
What do you think?

Both decribe the term internet meme, it's more like a subgroup. The concept of memetics is much older and the term meme was coined by Dawkins back in 76:
"The term meme was coined in Richard Dawkins' 1976 book The Selfish Gene, but Dawkins later distanced himself from the resulting field of study.Analogous to a gene, the meme was conceived as a "unit of culture" (an idea, belief, pattern of behavior, etc.) which is "hosted" in the minds of one or more individuals, and which can reproduce itself in the sense of jumping from the mind of one person to the mind of another."

@HubU Are you sure they work despite sociocultural differences? Or maybe we have such a strong western hegemony on culture that we‘ve become very similar overall.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I think meme's are nothing more than a visual version of the 'everymans joke'. A visual way to show humor on the average non-comedian level, as in jokes that are not invented but just heard and retold..why they 'meme' (spread). They are the 'why did the chicken cross the road' of visual humor.
And I feel they fit the same mold as those types of jokes in another way:
Much like the vast majority of those type jokes, they are not 'laugh at hilarious' they are merely air out the noise and smirk funny at best..why?
Because like them they are not popular because they are funny; they are funny because they are popular.
Most (to me) are not funny in any form (on its own) beyond the mental eyeroll type of enjoyment. but the popularity of them make it like the chicken joke. if your friends just made it up and told you you would think it was a stupid joke. BUT since you heard it 3000 times the novelty of its popularity to persist and familiarity makes it 'funny'.

@all: Thanks for the Dawkin angle, never heard of that actually.
It was more of a "what I thought about while showering" than the result of some deep research process, obviously

Indeed. Interesting... Do you think they also keep that "in check"/expands that hegemony?
Like, let's say, straight hair. Not something exclusive to white people, but something people do globally to "fit in"?
While in Thailand (and my childhood friend that lived there for years told me the same), you have "skin whitener".
It's not because they want to look white, but because they think a lighter skin is, like European nobles at the time thought that you only get dark if you have to work outside AKA manual labour.
When rich, you work in a comfy, inside setting. Thus skin = lighter.
They had that line of thinking way before they really knew what we were about.
So, yeah, intercultural links and references might also be tricky. You'll all be like "yeah, we get each other". You did, but for different (cultural, historical) reasons, actually.
It's just funny to me that future historians will have to talk about fucking memes in class at some point

A meme is cancer. Think about it for a bit. Its deeper than you think at first glance.

If you ask a lady in turkey if you can see her meme, you'll most likely get slapped.
@stormwolf: there is also meme kanser. you are totally right.

@HubU
Reminds me of my long ago friend I had I went to clubs with. He would walk right up to girls and go "Your cute can I buy you some drinks and we go to my place to bang?"
He would get dirty looks, cursed out, and sometimes even a slap. But his philosophy was "I might get rejected 9 times out of 10..but by 11pm I'm going home with that 1 that agreed and getting laid..while you are still here working on finding out if that girl you picked to hit on likes you enough to give her number later"

If the plan is to get out with litteral bang, well, at least, he was honest to god. Did that quite a few times in uni parties. Sounds dirty and seedy said like that, and I don't know about your friend. But I'll do it when there's some looks with a girl I like too.
Would go to her saying "Hey, I'm X, you seem interesting, can I buy you a beer?"
Then you're quite direct if you feel some common chemistry. Worst case scenario I ever lived? The equivalent of "thanks, but no thanks. Cheers, have a good one, hope you'll get lucky!". Or they would set me up with their single friends.
I used to be incredibly shy, and at the time, booze, you know?
Thaught myself to be confident, failures upon failings. And it fucking pays off in the end.
Like Churchill said (I think ) : "Key to success? Going from failure to failure, without losing the will to fight on".
Paraphrasing, obviously, but that's the jist of it
Welp, fit me like a glove

It was the reason he went to the clubs..lol to get laid as fast as possible.
Go in, find one ask her if she'd like a drink and some dick, so to speak..if not move to the next in 5 minutes.
Boiled down a "I'm looking to fuck? Are you? Want to with me? Awesome lets leave".
He was a decent looking guy, some nights he was there no more 20 minutes before waving on his way out the door with someone.
Now I don't condone nor condemn it. What you two do is you..have fun. But from a pure efficiency stand point he had it down to the bare minimum time needed.
