Greetings,

Are there generally any issues running modern 32-bit designed games on systems with the AMD64 processor on a 32-bit OS like WinXP or Win2k? I'm talking just about processor issues, not those associated with using the new 64-bit version of XP (which I've heard people do have problems with). I'm thinking about upgrading my system to AMD64. TIA for any suggestions and/or info....

Hey thanks for the info. I'm not up on the various Athlon64 cores, so I'm glad you mentioned that. What brand of A64 mobo is highly recommended these days? Asus?

well, it all depends on what features u want... i went for a Nforce3 board, and after reading a lot of reviews and such i found some good matches... so i bought...

[ Motherboard: MSI K8N NEO2 Platinum S939 NForce3 ]
[ Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 2000MHz, 400MHz FSB ]
[ Memory: 2x Corsair 512MB DDR-RAM, PC400 TwinXMS Pro ]

i didn't want a VIA chip core, nor did i care that much about the new PCI Express thing, so this K8N Neo2 board was the way to go... it kicked ass in every review i read and i can only totally agree... its just awsome. try to find a processor u want to go with first, and then find a matching mobo... this was my first MSI board, but i give it a A+

just my lil info, hope it helps Very Happy

The problem is that games only use 32bits and while 32bits work the other 32bits are doing nothing, and they start poking the working ones, then they all start fighting each other trowing threads and processor cycles at each other and your machine may crash !!

Remember Daemon-Tools and Alcohol 120% don't have any 64bit versions yet.

Yeah the MSI board looks pretty good...I'm not concerned about PCI express either, or SLI (which just looks like a way to sell more vidcards since from what I've read you don't get any significant performance boost). An A64 San Diego would be nice, but they're around $350...I'd really like that 1mb L2 cache though, I heard that really makes a difference. Now I just need the cash (or a bigger limit on my CC! Wink ).

Thanks again for the info KrazYJool, and everyone else.

Does that matter if you're not running a 64-bit OS?

I've got a DFI nF4 SLI-DR mobo, Corsair ram 2gb and an AMD 64 San Diego 4000+. What ever you do, don't get a DFi mobo and Corsair ram. Mines being RMA'ed today.

I can't wait to use my X850 XT PE.

What was the problem exactly? That's not a mobo I'm considering getting, but I've read a few good reviews of it. The whole SLI thing doesn't make much sense to me, unless you have plenty of cash to spend on 2 vidcards, since it doesn't seem to make much of a difference in performance compared to comparable non-SLI cards.

64bit is not 64bit unless the OS/software you run on the hardware is 64bit.

Simple as that.
