Iceland has one too don't they, rotted or rather fermented shark.

(Start of weird rant about strange food throughout the world here.)
 Spoiler:

But yeah Sweden, fermented fish in a can. Open up whenever you want to clear the room of everyone else. Very Happy

EDIT: Although for real disappointment and terror not much beats instant food.

Though more seriously I do enjoy testing more dishes these days although somewhat expired and slightly rotted stuff is probably a bit too advanced for my tastes.
Although I suppose if the taste is good then leave it that and don't ask what you just ate. Very Happy

(Humanitarian! https://www.theguardian.com/science/the-lay-scientist/2010/sep/05/human-meat-taste-cannibal )

Though it's more likely to be donkey or some such I suppose, horse was really common in meat a while back too from what I remember although it's probably closer to small trace amounts than 100% neigh.

The taste of surströmming is mostly very salty and fishy with an unpleasant aftertaste. The smell is a hundred times worse. The reason for loving surströmming must be braindamage.

As for sheep skull, that's Gotlands (island off Swedish southeast coast) "national" dish.

That's interesting, it was much closer than I was expecting.

Fishy unpleasant aftertaste though that does not sound appetizing at all for the fish dish the thread is about, plus fish can be a bit spongy in texture so this is probably way after that stage.

EDIT: Suppose that's part of heritage and ancestry perhaps, not wasting any produce of the animal or something like that.

Or just getting really creative with what could be accomplished.

Heh, it's slimy and breaks apart easily, turning into a slimy mush. It's utterly disgusting even when "eaten in the correct traditional way on flatbread with potato, chives, sourcream and onion". I will never touch the stuff for the rest of my life.

That certainly covers why even people who can take the shock from opening the can it's in (Usually how it's packed.) usually falter when they start trying to eat it then. Probably why there's so many of these challenge type videos ha ha.

And yeah I don't think the rest of the traditional dish could ever hope to cover for that type of texture and consistency of the fish or it's remains rather. (Not that it's supposed to I guess.)

I knew of the dish but not how it tested like other than seeing videos or it's other characteristics. Smile

Hmm wonder if there's still a significant portion of the population in Sweden that actually likes the thing, might end up disappearing if not although it does not seem like a big loss really.

Until someone rediscovers it again.

EDIT: Well that's unlikely, it's on the internet after all and nothing disappears from the internet. For better, or worse.

It's somewhat popular in the northern parts of Sweden but all in all it's a "delicacy" for a small part of the population.

Why someone would eat something that has such an indescribable smell is beyond me (well, I did, once).

HEY GUYS, DOES THIS LOOK TASTY TO YOU?
