Quote:
The 10-episode drama will launch in 2018 and is based on Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba's beloved comic of the same name.

Two years after it was put in development, Netflix has scooped up the Umbrella Academy TV series.

The streaming giant has handed out a 10-episode straight-to-series order for the adaptation of Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) and Gabriel Ba's beloved graphic novel. The drama will launch on the streaming service in 2018. (Check out the poster for the series, above.)

Based on the Eisner Award-winning comics, the live-action Umbrella Academy follows the estranged members of a dysfunctional family of superheroes (aka the Umbrella Academy): The Monocle, Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, Number Five, The Horror and The White Violin. Together, they work to solve their father’s mysterious death while coming apart at the seams because of their divergent personalities and abilities. The series was praised for its alternate and twisted take on the superhero genre.

Steve Blackman (Fargo, Netflix's Altered Carbon) serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Bluegrass Television, Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg from Dark Horse Entertainment. Way will co-exec produce. The pilot script was adapted from the comic book series by Jeremy Slater (The Exorcist).

Awesome news, the comics was great.

Stories parodying regular superheroes tropes ( such as the Boys coming out in 2019 ) will be the next hype thing for a couple of years Razz

Wached half of the series. It's quite good but lacks the wackiness of the comic book. For example Cha-Cha and Hazel are very toned down in comparison to the source material.

And finished it, it was good, above average for overall late Netflix quality but for someone like me too tame in comparison to the wtfness of the comic book. But apart from this not much to bitch about like in M Carbon.
The cast was in most part great, especially Klaus and number 5 - give this kid an award. Luther was meh and Diego was paper thin.
7.5/10

Seems like the Preacher show, if you know the source material you will be a bit disappointed but anyone unfamiliar with it will enjoy it and then maybe get disappointed afterwards when they get around to actually reading the comics to see how good they really are.

I think in this case they did pretty well all things considered the comics are very cartoony and over the top which doesn't translate all too well to a live action show without some changes also the comics don't have any character development at all apart from the paper thin backstory. Preacher changed way too much for no good reason at all, there was allrdy plenty of perfectly good character development they could have used but they had to make up some bullshit like Eugene getting buddy buddy with Hitler instead.

as a comic book guy who is used to changes in film adaptations, i think it was ok. my only complaint is no5 being older. i always thought he was 8 or something when he disappeared and that would have been funnier to see if they cast someone who looked 8.

dude they cast looks twice that age.

i am however still mad at guardians of the galaxy changing starlord's outfit from this

i really liked the german stormtrooper + gas mask vibes

what's worst is that they changed the comic book outfit to match the films. ugh

i'm fine with the change of tone, though i really do wish we'd get an annihilation adaptation that is true to the originals

Marvel did that with a lot of the MCU characters after the films took off, they changed the comic book outfits to look more like the movie ones to not confuse new comic book readers that first discovered these characters in the MCU films.

I liked it, although it isn't the greatest show out there, and at times it gets boring.

I like the whole theme of it but the execution is poor, the actors are so-so, the kid is kind of cool, the other ones i can be without (the junkie has a moment or two). I also don't get why its so fucking slow, 4 episodes in and i feel that this should have been in the first 1.5 episodes.

I finished it and I liked it a lot. Indeed, the execution isn't the greatest, the CGI is terrible at times and the actors aren't always consistent. However, I did enjoy the plot and the multi-layered characters. It's a good departure from the standard superheroes which have flooded the media in the last decade. I think number 4 and 5 had some fantastic moments, the kid in particular is very talented. The other actors did pretty well for themselves considering their roles weren't as special. The ending was great and quite the cliffhanger, but I'm not sure I like where the show is heading. The second season is most likely inspired by the Dallas series with some other plots to cover the gaps left by Hazel and Cha Cha. However:

Thought it was beyond childish (the junkie especially looks like it was made to entertain pre-teens with his behaviour) and rather cheap with the music/writing/feels and such. Actors were rather bad...

July 31. Very Happy

The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.
