Which one then?
I don't want no Apple because I use the tablets for multimedia and the filesystem concept of iOS pisses me off. It's easier to work with on Android. |
You're an iPhone user, right? Then I see not much of a reason to dedicate your tablet platform to Android. I'd go get a Chinese Windows tablet, really powerful stuff you can get for the money, like the Cube i7 Stylus.

Besides, ... Windows tablets are crap, crap multi-touch, crap displays, crap battery time, ... not interested. |
Cool. Go get yourself a Tab then. You'll probably find the bloat ROM to your liking since you're listing stock Android as a negative.

I don't find to be true anymore. With apps like Infuse, Ples and VLC, I find the "file system concept" much easier to use. And you get very good software support. I mean, it is debatable if phone apps on iOS are better than Android (I think they are), but on tablet there is no debate. Android for tablets is a horrendous experience of blown app phone apps and web "apps".
Also, how is "- stock android" a disadvantage?

If you used the tablet as a desktop, you were doing it wrong. It is important to consider these devices as consumption devices. For reading, watching, interacting - they do the job better than a desktop I think. Something to do with the immediacy of the controls. It's the software of course, as a Windows touch / tablet is horrendous even for that.

I bought a used but almost new iPad mini 2 35GB for abt 200€ in May. Mainly use it for reading, watching movies from my server, Netflix, browsing in bed. For all these tasks its good enough.
Those things are pure consumption devices, mostly, so I'd say whatever fits your consumption needs is good enough. Unlike PCs or Laptops, specs are not "that" important imo.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

No, you can use iTunes. You need to transfer files to a specific app's documents folder. It's very easy. For instance, when I need files on my device, I copy them to VLC.
Regarding your books, you can move them to iCloud storage. They will not get deleted.

@farne
Stock Android is the bloated clogged version you fucking moron.
(because you were thinking Stock Android vs Manufacturer Android only, which is not a true dichotomy, since there are other options than that, smartass!)
I prefer third-party ROMs like CM or whatever is available at xda.devs and then I take a version of opengapps.com that I think makes sense.
Obvisouly for tablets you might want to start with a smaller set of Google tools and install what you need from store.
I don't use as many Apps on the tablet as I do on the phone, because the tablet always stays home and has no SIM, it's purpose is entirely different.
|
If you're intent on installing a custom ROM on your tablet, why the fuck do you care if the tablet has 'stock android' or not? What an idiot. Besides, stock android is the most base of android app packages that have been meticiulously designed to not make the phone choke up on resources.
Samdung tablets/phones, for example, comes with their crap, including facebook and other horseshit like that IN ADDITION to the stock android apps. Clear?

I have never had this issue where I need to delete an app but keep its files. Most apps I use have iCloud backup option to have what I need there. With iOS 8 or 9, iCloud Drive was released and that has set all my problems away. I understand you issue here, but it is a relatively minor concern when comparing to the app ecosystem.
I find iCloud prices competitive. I pay a 3-4$ and get 50GB. I have put all my photos there, including raw, music, etc. You have a similar service from Google, but at what cost? I prefer privacy.

If you plan to use it regularly to read while lying, bear in mind that 10-inch tablets can be heavy and clunky for this.
I had a 10-inch one, it was too fucking heavy to hold for longer than 10 minutes (and I do gym so I'm not weak in arms), sold it and bought a 7-inch sub-300 grams one, and I can lie & read happily now.

Because 600gr to you is like 200gr for a normal size human. Btw, yes the Samsung OS extension are actually good now! But didn't android 7 naturally support split screen? Wouldn't this mean that you should rather go with android 7 than rely on samsungs proprietary split screen feature? (which worked very well with the apps that support it and I use it all the time with youtube on one part, and reddit is fun on the other ^_^)

iPad 2 is quite heavy. The iPad became easy to hold with Air. If you had no issue holding that, virtually any modern tablet will do for size/weight.
