Hi, Can I use Chromecast (whatever that is) to stream video or whole desktop to my TV? It's older lg without any "smart functions".

As I understand Chromecast can allow that without running over 5 meters in the same room.

I want to stream in the same room as pc and router is, so signal will not be a problem at all

should work, but i would got for a small dedicated media player box. much more opportunities

either something like a pi3 with openelec etc or the way better solution

http://www.gearbest.com/tv-box-mini-pc/pp_343636.html?

something like that, atm cheap as fuck. runs full windows 10, or you can install any linux distro like openelec or kodi directly (or use that on windows, or plex or whatever). and cause its full windows and not some arm restricted linux stuff -> you can use any vod service etc

shitty chromecast and similar sticks should cost around 40-50 bucks, that (with shipping from china, takes 2-3 weeks) is only slightly more expensive. that 86 usd are a steal for that

None of that available in Poland.

But if chromecast can mirror my screen, then how is any other box doing anything better?

just an example, you might something like aliexpress which ships to poland too

cause those boxes can be hooked directly to the tv and you can stream your files etc via cable. and it supports everything instead of only some codecs and the screen mirroring of chromecast was shit when i tried it. you can even use those thingys for steam inhome streaming etc

https://thepihut.com/collections/raspberry-pi/products/raspberry-pi-3-model-b ships to poland.

i'm using two older models (livingroom/bedroom) and they've been great. used regular micro-usb phone chargers to power them for a few years (older models have lower power requirements) but bought some pi3 psu's from pihut a while back and getting the new models sometime this fall/winter when brexit's pounded the pound a bit more Awesome

If you have a cabled LAN setup: Steam Link. Shit easy, cheap (especially with their discounts), no install and barely any setup. Anything that runs on your desktop will run on it and you'll be able to play your games on the TV.

Unless you want something more dedicated that doesn't need your PC to be on.

I haven't looked at any online options for it really, as i download everything we want to watch to a 4tb hooked on the router and that saves monthly subs to all those services (i assume sky go/amazon costs $$). this is a piracyforum after all ^_^

anyways, there's also PlayOn (maybe an OSS solution as well, dunno) that runs on a windows pc and kodi streams various vod-platforms from that.

on x86/windows based kodi installations you can run any vod plattform too with scripts, but not on arm based like the pi

and to have much more freedom like for stuff like steam inhome streaming i would go for a cheap china atom box and no pi3 setup, as i said expenses will be almost the same

Do steam link requires cable from router or can it connect thropught wifi?
So I can just add home media player Classic as steam "game" and run it ?!
Steam Link is more expensive than chromecast but desktop mirroring would probably look better than on chromecast framerate wise.
I will look into it, thanks.

Defienietly not looking into ordering anything from alliexpress or raspberry pie solutions

what do you think what steam link is? its based on some crappy marvel dual core soc which costs 10dollars at max. that soc is even used in some chromecast sticks, its crappy and slow. and yes it works wireless but not good

still would prefer the chinabox route, its way more powerful and flexible for the money

We have some Minix Android box, and it is just perfect for streaming. It also allows Nvidia shield functionalities with 3rd party programs (moon something it is called I think). And since it is Android, you can add and remove whatever apps you want. Also, it has an ethernet port AND a wifi port and can even double as a wifi range extender if you connect via ethernet. Nothing fancy, but works well for what it needs to do.

Steam Link is not crappy and slow lol... It does suck major balls with wifi though, so I'd only recommend it in a wired LAN setup.

Why do I care about wifi lag with watching movies....

Well you should care about the disconnects and worsening the image quality (does fuck up the colours) when it struggles with the Wifi. Which the Steam Link will do... good device just not in a wireless setup.

Gave them the benefit of the doubt before, since they were working on it but it's still a crap shoot and most people have problems with the wireless part.

I see,
I have good router and it's all in the same room but still, Steamlink IS intended for cable connection.
But I could just load up media player classic hc in it and watch movies with subtitles like normal ?!

The simple way: Steam desktop mode and you can run whatever is on your PC and stream it to the TV. So yeah you can use it like that, been watching F1 and Football streams with it (mostly using it for my roms collection though).

That being said if you have the cash and don't mind setting things up there are better things. This is just a cheap and simple solution. 'Works out of the box' kind of deal at a lower price than what some others provide.

What I'm wondering though: Doesn't your tv have an ability to play movies if you hook it up to your LAN? Then you can just use software like Plex or Mezzmo to stream directly to your TV. My LG has that and it's a cheap 2013 model

My LG is 2007 and have NOTHING !!!
It's piece of shit and I just want cheap way to stream to it cause I have no money for new one.

Otherwise I would just wifi or cable it.

Steam desktop mode. Big Picture ?

When you connect through your link: steam goes into big picture mode.

In big picture there is a desktop mode which minimizes Steam and then you see your desktop. You can control it with whatever you haved plugged into the Link. I use a wireless 360 controller for instance.

Start at 2m38s, if the video doesn't (and ignore his exit big picture part ).

wow thats super helpful and steamlink is only a bit more expensive than chromecast but should ultimately prove much more useful. nice as long as its not half duplexing framerate when alt tabbed or something. It looked good on that video

I never had problems with it other than a few Emulators (most work) flipping out with the controller being used as mouse/keyboard when you loaded up a game... but I circumvented that with a Front End.

In your case you don't have to worry, it will do the things what you want from it without setting up extra things.

(all of my experiences are on a wired LAN... just making sure that is clear! )

Thanks very much. I now know what I need.
I will probably hold off on steam controller for now. I will use 360 controller to pause/start video or something.
Wonder how long to ship to Poland

Shipping is from the Netherlands, make sure to do it on a Sunday/early Monday though since if you order it directly from Steam... Valve takes two days just to process the order.
