|
 |
Around Easter time, I met an old friend and he was having a complete old track bike in his barn - a real barn find - it was in such a poor condition, with a lot of dust and so, asked him if i can throw a look. All that dust revealed a fully Shimano600 equipped bike, with a Columbus Aelle (magnesium + carbon composite) frame - i was stoked, asked him if i can have it, he accepted.
Plan was to restore it and during the restoration, convert it to single speed, it would of been my 2nd single speed that i built. Their simplicity draws me like a drug and it reminds me of my early years ( i learned to ride on single gears ).
Anyway, like any project it had it's ups and downs, finally sorted all the parts and it's done.

Changes:
- stripped the frame of old paint, shaved off the derailleur and gear shifter "ears" from the frame, repainted in Porsche Ruby Red
- single speed conversion, kept the hubs intact, removed the gears cassette
- converted drophorns to bullhorns
- retrimmed the seat post
- cleaned and polished parts
- new michelin tires

To do:
- fit smaller brake handle
- wrap the bullhorns
- apply decals which i rebuilt in illustrator
Very happy with the weight - 9 kilos!
I will update once it's completely done.
Anyone shares this hobby?

Don't share the hobby but awesome job indeed. Someone here on the humps was restoring a motorbike, no?
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube

add some fender to it and your set ... trust me on this

Sorry for hijacking your thread, but could someone tell me if this bike is a good purchase?

Click "Specifikationer" and you'll get the run-down on the components, you'll probably recognize the names. It's about 300 euros right now, so I might buy it if it's quality stuff.

Don't worry, for that price is a bargain.
On topic, the bike is completed, here's some detail shots, as you all know how a bike looks like.

Nice job Danyutz!

That would've been me (with my brother)
A 1951 DKW RT 125 to be exact. We actually got it done, I'll see if I can find the time to make some nice photos when the weather picks up again. Wasn't that big of a pain either, finding parts for DKW is remarkably easy

looks great! so that handlebar is for track bikes? Never knew for sure. I saw it on some ITT stages in the cycling sport and I have it on my own bike too, although with a downward bend, hehe D:
8 out of 10 dentists prefer zipfero to competing brands(fraich3 and Mutantius)!

My handlebar was originally shaped as dropbars ( like yours ), but i cut it into bullhorn shape as you see it now.

That's a bit outdated, I would look for something with brake disk.

Flip-flop hub, i have one on my previous built bike. This one was more vintage
Yours looks very good, not plain, but functional, daily commute. I love the simplicity of this type of bikes. I already plan my next project.

Revive, but I sold the bike and already started another bike to build. If anyone is curious, I can post some photos up.
Got a new track frame made of Scandium, with carbon fork, weight is close to nothing.

A nice package arrived from Germoney today ( they never cease to impress me with how smooth things go) and in the package was a Mavic XM119 27.5" rim, Miche Primato with large flanges track hub for the front, SRAM Automatix coaster hub for the rear ( has 2 built in gears, which change at around 18km.h ) and 2 Schwalbe Marathon 27.5" tires.
Also ordered other parts like crank set + bottom bracket, rear wheel ( which is 36 spokes which Mavic doesn't do ), pedals, seat post and new chain.
The idea behind the bike is the simplicity of a single speed/fixed bike, but with more functionality - track frame with mountain bike wheels. The wide tires will allow me to ride on unpaved road.
Sourcing all the parts was time consuming, required a lot of calculations, "will it fit?" questions. Being such a weird concept, there isn't that much information about such bikes, can't really ask people about it either, because there's MTB people or Track people
Anyway, next step is preparing the frame, "shave" it from unnecessary accessories ( like cable holders, etc ) and paint.
I'll keep this open for future updates.

Edited the title, I'm sure I'm not the only one that likes this hobby. Even if you just ride for fun, post your experiences/questions.
I'm not a bike guru, I do a lot of research and I mostly base my experience on trying - what can go wrong?

Is it fixed or freewheel? I wanted to build one with double rims, love the looks.
I've received the rest of the parts, I can build the bike now.
Shimano Alfine crankset:
Nukeproof handles
Nukeproof Pedals
Nukeproof seat post
Shadow Conspiracy Interlock V2 chain

It's fixed. But I really prefer the feel of steel, so I'm looking at getting a custom frame built by a local bike builder.
