By Kelly Bailey, the composer of the HL1, HL2, Portal soundtracks, programmer on a bunch of stuff and level designer of one of the most iconic sequences in video game history: the experiment gone awry in HL1.

He left Valve in 2011 but returned at some point in 2013 or something. He has been working on and off since then with them, but for this game he made it on his own with his own company (which consists of.. just himself).

D&D Meets Zelda In 'Vanishing Realms,' A Killer RPG For The HTC Vive

Quote:
Imagine my supreme surprise when I realized Vanishing Realms felt like a real-life D&D game crossed with The Legend of Zelda.

After putting on the Vive headset, a pair of headphones, and the system’s comfortable touch controllers, I was transported to a classic looking stone dungeon. There were heavy wooden doors, mysterious scrolls, watery graves, and rooms with hidden treasures tucked into shadowy corners, inviting cautious exploration.

Quote:
His answer? “It’s just me.” Needless to say I was fairly shocked by the response. The systems in place here are elegant and intuitive, and it’s a fully realized world. One individual made this? Then again, Bailey seems like a man who understands fun game mechanics.

Vanishing Realms: Rite of Steel is an immersive Role Playing Game designed from the ground up for Virtual Reality play. Use one-to-one motion controls and movement so that you are fully in control of combat. To swing, duck and block, you don't hit a button, but physically move to perform these actions as if you were there - because you are!

Treasure chests, weapon shops, a horde of undead foes, mystic writings, banished gods, lost artifacts, ancient tombs and moonlit forest - it's all here waiting to be discovered in a beautifully hand-crafted VR realm.

Battle life-sized monsters in stunning, face-to-face melee and magical combat. Hold weapons directly in your hands, learn to block enemy strikes, seek openings in their armor and defenses and strike back. The longer you play Vanishing Realms, the more you'll hone your physical skills. You'll take on more powerful and advanced enemies as you move deeper into the world.

Explore, Discover, Collect, Solve. Vanishing Realms invites players to directly interact and move freely through a rich and varied fantasy world.

Play. Vanishing Realms combines the long tradition of hand-crafted game design with the intuitive and immersive experiences made possible through Virtual Reality and hand-held tracked controllers. First and foremost, Vanishing Realms is a fully realized adventure game.

Surround yourself with Adventure. Pause to take in the moonlit vista before you. Rest beneath a gnarled apple tree - it's good to see the night sky again. How long have you been fighting and exploring in this place? Rummage in your backpack, take a few bites of bread and cheese, drink a healing draught, think of all you've seen and...is something moving over there...on the tree line, beyond the rock outcropping?

Releases on Vive's launch on April 5.

What a dumb cover. Why would you position a female warrior like that? Looks like Gollum or some dwarf.

Also the art-style of the logo doesn't fit the ingame-artstyle at all.

Bye.

Yup that will not end well some of them are bound to feel like the people who bought a betamax recorder in the 80s at some point in the future Laughing

Or the API battles of the 90s. "This games runs accelerated only on Glide/PowerVR/etc".

The situation is not so bad though. UE4, CE V and Unity offer out of the box support for both the Vive and the Rift so developers relying on those engines' VR functionality don't have to worry about compatibility (unless they do their own implementation). SteamVR/OpenVR also supports the Rift although support might be trailing behind compared to the Vive at first.

Exclusive deals aside the situation should resolve itself in the future.

I imagine that if they ever get the controllers out and room tracking(contrary to what the Lucky Palm says, from what I've read it doesn't "work fine") I would imagine it would probably come to the Rift as well.

Obviouslly Bob does not suffer from tall man problems. Like with how I have to slouch when I visit my tiny friends' houses.

I'm 5'7" btw, I guess I should stop being friends with Hobbits.

But that is a cover art.

If i would have done it, i would at least let the woman stand straight, and not like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Also her arm anatomy looks wrong. I wonder how long she is able to hold or even swing that heavy axe with those skinny forearms.
