Because the movie is tracking to open at $65-70++M (with a budget of sub- $60M) Fox has already greenlit the sequel.
Same writers, who also were executive producers throughout the production, probably the same director (he still hasn't signed up but he probably will), Reynolds of course and lastly Cable is rumored that will feature in it.
It appears that the quirky marketing worked wonders, in late January it even was the most anticipated movie among females!!

|
I wonder why it's ranked so highly with females? I was at the store a couple days ago and the girl at the register was talking about wanting to see it, which at the time I thought was kind of strange because it didn't seem like something that many women would be interested in.

The fact they are aware of the movie in the first place means they were exposed to the marketing and it clicked with them. (It's not like it's a well know property, or a sequel and the fact it takes place in the same universe as the highly commercial X-Men movies is something most people are not aware of.)
So I guess they found the marketing to be funny? Because that's how they tried to sell it (quirky / funny rather than "epic").

In all the years I've known about Deadpool and Cable. There's absolutely no one else I can imagine getting Cable right other than Stephen Lang.

Wow, very much unexpected! Director Tim Miller exited the project because of a series of creative differences with Ryan Reynolds. They gave the impression the whole team were totally on the same page regarding.. everything, but I guess not.

This is shit. The first one was made only because these two guys busted their arses to get the project made. This could derail the movie badly.

Further Details

Things came to a head regarding the casting of Cable. Kyle Chandler was Miller’s choice, Reynolds didn’t want him for the part and the studio sided with the star because his renegotiated contract includes casting approval.
Miller was a key in making the first film such a massive success, apparently he’s the one that leaked the CG test footage in 2014 that got the whole project moving in the first place and saw it pull in a $780 million worldwide gross which also recharged Reynolds’ career. Miller’s exit on Friday was said to be amicable with the director is jumping into another project at the studio, “Influx”. |

That's a shame, he must have been terrible at shooting people with a glowing eye!
All kidding aside, maybe it's not a bad news, since Reynolds wants to keep the same tone/style as the first movie - or maybe he wants to destroy it - Deadpool movie acted, directed, produced and killed by Deadpool himself
