Now that we have a new car, we are planning on going to Rome with it in September. Since it's a loooong way off, I was thinking of stopping in Stuttgart and Milan for a day. Question is, is it worth it to stop in Stuttgart and/or Milan? I don't really want to go to Stuttgart, but it's on the way. An alternative would be to stop in Luxembourg (a 50KM detour) instead of Stuttgart.
What would be the better choice?

Stop to see in Stuttgart what? Ahahaha. Fuck Stuttgart! On the way you'll pass Heidelberg which is very nice and worth a visit.

It's been a long time since I've visited the northern cities (Milan unfortunately has never been the target, only the airport) but for one day I would recommend it, if only for the Duomo alone, Gallery and the whole city centre which is always full of life (or so I've been told!).
Before Rome, you should definitely visit Florence too, even if briefly. Now that there aren't 40C° anymore, it's much more pleasant to explore.

Milan, then to Rome
I can't remember exactly where you live (pretty sure you told me in a PM once), but I'd suggest crossing the border around Luxembourg anyway. Come down via the A2/E25 in NL, stay on it until halfway between Visé/Liège and then turn to the E42 (Spa, Malmedy, St. Vith) to get to Germany. From there, towards Saarbrücken, then Basel, Luzern, Lugano and finally Milan.
That's roughly the route I took 2 years ago and I couldn't have planned it better. No traffic anywhere except at the Swiss border and a great route all around. Look those places above up on a map and you'll see exactly what I mean. Ardennes, Eiffel, Switzerland.

I would go as far as suggesting to actually spend an entire day+night. My parents went there a couple of weeks ago and they loved the city as much as I did 2 years ago. Bastards spent 5 days there though, I only spent 1

Maybe try airbnb? Usually you can rent a small flat for decent prices, especially in Italy where hotels are quite expensive.

What the hell is up with the crazy hotel prizes in Munchen? It'll be a 100KM detour to get there, but that's fine. The hotel prices though are insane, 150+ euros. Is there any city very close to Munchen with proper hotels (and non-retarded prices)?

Tons of offers a little over 50 euro on Airbnb, just like Invasor suggested.
Today I didn't even need to use my AK. I gotta say it was a good day. (c) - Ice Cube

People are asking 50-60 euros for a small room with a matras, that's not reasonable. We are a family of three, which brings me to the 100+ euros range on airbnb. Luckily, the hotel prices in Rome seem to be reasonable.

Hello my Italian friend. Where can I get to a mafia wedding during which the godfather can't deny my request? |
You should have married me!
In all seriousness, as long as you don't aim for the deluxe comfort with gold faucets and a David's shaped shower, you can find a decent room that doesn't cost a fortune quite easily. Even if you aren't exactly in the centre, public trasportation works quite fine (considering the messy streets ) so there shouldn't be any problem.
(Take a look at Trivago too in case the other sites don't offer many options.)

How much will we be using the public transportation? There's a Roma pass available for 30 euros per person, which is good for three days free public transportation and two free museum visits.

Sorry for the late reply, had to help my father and this time we had basically no internet (*curses*). The Roma pass isn't cheap, but it depends on how much you plan to explore, and on the amount of walking that you intend to face. There are some limitations as far as I remember (it's been a while since I've looked into this), for example the free pass isn't valid for all the museums, and so on.
edit:
Just found this, hopefully it will help: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187791-c149376/Rome:Italy:Roma.Pass.Is.It.Worth.It.html

My tip for Rome: Most stuff can be done by foot. When you look at the map or bus routes it looks far apart but in all honesty most of the sightseeing things are 10 to 15 minutes apart from each other. )
We went from the Stadio Olimpico to Piaza Venezia by bus and went on foot from there.

Yup! That would be my recommendation too (the general "what I would do" ). Though if there are little kids/older people involved*, relying on public transportation almost becomes a necessity..it's up to you Mister_s really.

and keep away from the usual tourist traps which every italian city has (overpriced restaurants etc pp. watch out for streets where every pizza/pasta whatever restaurant is next to each other and looks all the same. instead look for some neat and nice side street with single restaurants)
