I may or may not have some nude pictures, sent by someone. Laughing
How do I encrypt the folder, so even if downloaded, it can't be opened by anyone else?

RAR it with a triple random word upper/lowercase password?

If you have 7z you can compress it to that format, just use a password that isn't a word and is at least 8 characters. Not even the NSA could crack that.

apparently WinRAR uses 128bit, 7z uses 256bit AES Laughing

do you need to use the folder like a folder or just save stuff?
for just saving, 7z, rar are probably enough

if you want an encrypted folder, that's a bit trickier

create and mount an encrypted volume
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VeraCrypt - a truecrypt fork - a result of the truecrypt audit, so you know it's a fortress

encrypt folder with individual files
this is great if you need to sync, version control the content or want to host it on dropbox or other cloud service
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EncFS
http://members.ferrara.linux.it/freddy77/encfs.html - simple windows port
https://www.boxcryptor.com/en - more user friendly but free version was limited to 4GB when i used it a few years ago

i think windows has it's own encrypted folders but i have no idea how secure they are (i wouldn't trust it)

I'd presume it's the same in Win8/8.1/10 too. Though there is a limitation; the encrypted files lose their encryption when moved to a FAT/FAT32/exFAT location/device... so yeah, not exactly the safest method it seems. I'd stick with 7z/RAR.

As shown above, even with a supercomputer, it would take 1 billion billion years to crack the 128-bit AES key using brute force attack.

http://www.eetimes.com/document.asp?doc_id=1279619
use a nondictionary word at least 8 chars long with special chars.
i would be afraid of keyloggers, programs for recovering data's (you delete files after you put it in the archive), not someone bruteforcing passwords.

Not to mention, unless these are State Secrets, the evidence of extraterrestrials, the location of Jimmy Hoffa's body or the leaked Emma Watson sex tape, I doubt anyone is going to even TRY bruteforcing your passworded archive Razz

Unless it uses a dictionary and P4SW0RD is at the top of the list.
