|
 |
I think this forum is a good place to ask, since I assume a lot of you are like me and sit at a PC for most of the day, days at a time.
Since I didn't get a job I applied for, my hopes of keeping fit at work have been dashed and I will forever be sitting on my ass at a desk.
At the moment I go for small walks maybe once a day, and do maybe 30-60 push ups. I will sometimes ride my bike but it's rare. I used to run/walk on the treadmill doing 6k a day but I stopped that around a year ago. It's just so boring.
What do you, what do you consider to be 'enough', and how do you find the motivation to do it when you're always busy?

I mostly do the boring stuff :>, since it's the only effective way to easily stay fit, without sacrificing my omnom diet. Like that old ad once said, take everything, but not my food!
Thankfully though I often get to replace running with tennis or some 5-a-side (don't do sports competitively anymore because of my silly hernia), which are much more enjoyable as long as you find the right people. It's only 2-3 times a week now, so nothing too time consuming or hard.
And some daily exercises as well (when I remember). But not the local gym, I've frequented it for a couple of years and that was already too much for my back and for the mind. Douches, douches everywhere.

Atm not, not at all.
But I used to do push ups 30 a day, same for sit ups. The brunt of my exercise was biking, everywhere I needed to go I biked, On days with good weather where I was free I would do some bike trips along the water or any place with a view. That 'leisure' biking I always did with a heart meter staying in cardio zones to minimize the acid build up. Mostly resulted in an hour or two those trips or better: between 40 and 70km depending how much I stopped to take in the view.
Usually people go for low cadence in hard gear, but that's more for strengthening yourself I went the other route (which takes longer to be good at): high cadence in an easy gear. strenght I always got out of my job and never needed additional.
If you want to go for fitness no matter what you are doing I will always suggest use a heart meter and figure out the right zone. You'll never have sore muscles and you'll have a better workout which also results in lesser reasons to give up.
I used to way 70kg (1m82) and a low fat percentage still strong enough to lift 80kg on my own without stressing (my jobs never required more so I didn't care for more power), just by sticking to that. Used to have a resting heart rate of 56/58 3 years ago
Not going to say what it is now tho I quit smoking and the jobless sedentary life in Sweden over the past 2 years haven't done me good. And I imagine the pills that are even used by cancer patients aren't helping either.
On the motivational part, back then: I loved to bike and I love the beautiful scenes this planet can throw at you... never needed a camera to capture it since I rather view it in the present and through my own lenses, but I can see how that could motivate one extra. What also helps... after a month or two when doing it all on cardio... the feeling becomes an addiction and you start doing it because it feels good.
There were other times when I did Muy Thai Kickboxing which is quite fun if you are into a fight sport (never did matches since it was all fun for me, only semi contact during training), quite an all round sport where you get in shape fast even if it's only twice a week. Avoid those lame fitness thai boxing shit they are offering everywhere tho. If you are going to do it, it's better to learn the real stuff so you actually gain more from it rather than derpy useless stuff that has no technique at all.
About the always busy part: you need to schedule it in if it's not out fun and I'd imagine it would help if someone enforces you to that schedule.
TL,DR: most important bit: Start the right way: Cardio zones/Heart Rate Training Zones

Google for Body Weight Exercises, or better start building a home gym. I did that myself too. Doing those for about 60 minutes every two days should be enough
You can also try the high intesity interval training called Tabata. 4 minutes of hardcore exercises will fuck you up good, but also make you much fitter over time

I walk 30 min every day and run twice a week + some push ups and sit ups. Of cause I bike to everything as well. It seems to work fairly well. If you have a bike why not ride it?
Also it is easier to feel fit if you're not fat. Loosing fat is by far much easier by changing your diet than training.

I have two different things I do on a regular basis:
1. I play Badminton two times a week for 2h. The skill levels are high enough to be competitive, so you have a good workout with alot of fun. You want to win so you give it everything on every match. Its an excellent compensation, especially on frustrating days on the job.
2. I go to the Fitness three times a week (on the days I dont do Badminton). I go for a full-body routine and interchange exercises, I only do very few exercises. Day A: Bench Press, Squats, Barbell Rows, Military Press, and something for the Bizeps. Day B: Deadlifts, Inclined Dumbell Press, Chin-Ups, High-Pulls or lateral dumbell raises, and something for the Triceps. A-B-A or B-A-B.
3. If for, whatever reason, mainly work, I dont go to the fitness, I'll just do 3-4 sets of Push ups and as many Pull-Ups or Chin-Ups I can manage in sets of 7-10.
I have been playing Badminton for years now, but started the fitness only almost two years ago after I had an accident and stopped smoking. I didnt make that much progress compared to other (younger) people mainly because I didnt adapt my nutrition and I have had quite some interruptions because of work, but the whole thing makes me feel alot better. Walking steps, opening doors etc. everyday things feel easier. And my body is in a lot better shape than ever before (obviously since I never did anything). Also making progress is always very satisfactory.
I have never been a sporty guy in my whole life, but now I feel like I could not do without anymore.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

I haven't been to the gym in 3 weeks and I want to crawl out of my skin.
The back exercises in the gym make a load of difference if you are sitting behind a desk all day, and then all day at home (like I do atm). I had 80kg (I'm 176cm), and now I'm at 76.3 kg I lost all my muscles :'(
I'll probably start next week, doctor said not to strain myself so I waited, but I need to get back my gains asap!
Plus now that it's gorgeous outside, I'll assemble my bike that was in the basement during the winter, and go to work on it, and I plan to use it as my main source of transport (will save me close to 50€ of monthly tickets for city transportation).

I didn't do anything until one month ago, when i started playing soccer once a week with my work colleagues, for one hour.
The weather is getting warm and i plan to buy a MTB and just ride whenever I have the time.

Weight lifting, it's the best thing imho, not only you burn the calories but you also get buff. Cardio might be more efficient on the calorie burning side but the additional bonus of a better looking body is so much worth it. Also it serves as an additional motivation to keep doing it, once you gain the muscles it's hard to stop working out as you fear of losing all the progress you worked so hard for.
I used to go to the gym but it's too much of a hassle and a time-waster. A bench + free weights and you can do all your muscle groups just fine out of your bedroom. Plus I can just turn on the TV and catch up on some less important shows while doing it.

Currently on 12-1300 calories a day... no bread, no pasta, no rice, no red meat, if it generally tastes good = no ... so lots of raw veggies, chickpeas, tuna, chicken, cottage cheese, etc. Also trying to do 3 trips to the gym a week (30 min cycle, 30 min elliptical, 30 min weights). but then again I'm trying for a 10,000 calorie a week deficit to lose weight. fml, but at least doing all that I can still drink a few beers every now and then.
Hoping to transition to something more "normal" once I've lost a bit more weight (currently at 173lbs from ~205lbs since mid-January)
that being said I do try to ride my bike to my desk job most of the year (~25min each way) and also go for a 30min walk after lunch.

1300 calories / day
...
lol. wtf.
Had you success with that kind of diet before?
If not: you probably will get fat very fast as soon as you eat normally again. Use some calories calculator and subtract about 10% of it. That still is health and you will lose weight more natural, also slower
At least i can't live with so few calories a day. I notice it at the more exhausting exercises i do: When i didn't eat enough before i will feel dizzy or even feel like puking

Ever since reaching adulthood I've had some issues with maintaining my weight, but lately I've been doing a gym routine for about 6 months and it's working well, started out with something called stronglifts (stronglifts.com) but to my dismay I gained weight, making me look considerably a lot buffer, although still kinda pudgy, so I changed my diet to LCHF, lost about 10 kilograms in one month.
I'd build a home gym if you wanna stay in shape, you don't need much more than a power rack, a barbell, some plates and something to lie flat on while doing benchpresses and you can achieve gods work.

Well I had a situation where my typically less than active life style on an average day started to catch with me. I wasn't overweight (ideally I would probably need to gain some, since I am closer to the lower end of the index), but I was getting out of shape, since the extra weight was going to all the wrong places...
My indoors solution for when I don't want to waste a lot of time was to get an elliptical. I just drag it in front of my TV and watch an episode of some show while I am on it. I mean, I am gonna just lie on the couch (or eat something!) while watching it otherwise - might as well do something healthier instead, that way I am not "losing" much time. It works really great if you are willing to put effort into it and not just walk on it. I do about 35 mins of HIIT every other day and so far it has served me well.
I also do some quick sets of weight lifting in between those cardio days (while watching a show again )
During the warmer seasons I started cycling. I always enjoyed it anyway, and now I just put more effort into it: do some longer and longer routes while keeping the speed up. I have my phone attached tracking speed, distance, the route (via GPS) and my heart rate. I try to discover new routes and enjoy the "great outdoors" in some 50KM radius (so far) around my town. This does take a lot of time though (2hrs+), so if you don't like it it's not the best way to go about.
The combined result of this (it's just about going to be a year since I stared doing it regularly) is that I trimmed myself by some 8KG (it's not a lot, but as I said, I wasn't really overweight either) and I definitely feel better about my physical condition in general.
I haven't made any real adjustments to my diet, since that would be too much work
Now if only I managed to force myself into getting proper amounts of sleep every day as well, that'd be real great...
Bottom line, I think, is that if you really want to get fit you will have to put in some effort. About an hour of proper exercise 3 times a week is great and doesn't really take up that much time if you manage to work it in your "schedule" properly. Running, cycling, swimming... anything will work as long as you actually work it instead of just lazily shuffling about. If you haven't done it in a while you will want to start slow for the first couple of weeks though

So men,
I started eating only fruits and 50-100g of nuts every day
drinking only water and fresh fruit juice
doing 20 push-ups and 20 sit-ups per day
going 7-th day now
and you know what?
I HAVEN'T LOST A SINGLE KILO YET
only thing that's changed is I stopped shitting every day
guess I'm still waiting for my body to run out of short-term resources yet..

20 push ups and 20 sit ups is like 20-40 calories burned, so that bit is not helping much.
