My fiancee was assigned to make Polish subtitles for the movie above, and we have a bit of a problem with this part:

5:39 to 5:49

We think he says the following:

- One of mine?
- Janet wanted one of your baby shoes, like mom had fixed.
- We'll put them both on their mettle. Thanks, Ed.

We have no idea what the second sentence means, it makes little to no sense. Did their mom (the two characters talking are brothers) collect their baby shoes? What does it mean that she had them fixed? Fixed, as in repaired?

There are no subtitles for this movie anywhere by the way. Razz

We've listened to it thousand of times and we're still not sure. Very Happy

all true except the last one

We'll put 'em both on the mantel (fireplace place for ornaments)

they wanted one of the guy's baby shoes as a souvenir, to put as a decoration above the fireplace, or hang on the fireplace, to store candy for Christmas

I expected it to be harder since you requested native speakers. :/
Bit weird you heard the word mettle with that. You sure you pronounce that one right?

Not much of a difference in pronunciation between mettle and mantle, especially pronounced in American pronunciation and because of the quality of the movie. Wink

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/british/mettle

That, and the idiom "to put on one's mettle" made sense with the shoes and the fact that he's talking about the mileage of them. Sometimes the problem lies in the easiest things! Smile

Besides, the main reason why this thread was created is because of the weird second sentence, hence my questions:
