Or rather it's unpopular to be wallonian in Belgium!
Belgians!
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

The flemish create most of Belgium's riches, while the south (walloons) is poorer. So some flemish (well, kind of a lot) want the north to secede from the south, but then Brussels, which is 90+% french-speaking but technically located in Flanders, would become what?
It's a long story.

Depends what they mean with Flemish, if its the whole of Flanders than there is nothing unpopular about it. When we talk of West-Flemish... well a lot of us that are not from that province look a bit down upon them because they can't speak properly (hey just telling how it is ) and they are usually referred to as 'farmers'.
Most people from Flanders are idiots when it comes to Wallonië (The French part), they think of them as the poor uneducated part of Belgium and whine on them for not speaking Dutch (while most of the shits can't speak French so... ) and other stupid things.
So in the end I would say you were misinformed, there is a lot of bullshit being spouted on both sides. It's not near the civil war most Swedes around here ask me about
Most of my friends and family are proud of being Belgians (as am I), we don't really think in terms of being Flemish. Hell I even get annoyed when people here (Sweden) say I speak Flamländska, so I tell them that that is a dialect and in Belgium we speak 3 official languages: Nederländska,Franska and Tysk.
Anywho... to answer the question: It's more unpopular to be a Walloon (even tho I think that's just idiots spouting that )

Damn dem Walloons *shakes first*
You got it backwards kenny. It's the Walloons that are unpopular and for good reason. Morph tries to make it sound better, but fact is that where the Flemish at least make an effort to speak with someone who doesn't speak Dutch (just like we Dutch do), the Walloons don't. And it's not because they can't. I live 2 minutes from the border with Wallonia (the French half), and about 15-20 minutes from the border with Flanders (got family living in both parts too). The Walloons just across the border here are capable of speaking our dialects (as in, the Dutch Limburgian dialects), but they refuse to do so when speaking to us out of some superiority complex they inherited from the French. It's not all of them, just like it's not all French who refuse to speak anything else, but it is the vast majority. Yet, amongst themselves they'll actually speak the dialects. It's so bad that I've been in petrol stations just across the border, heard them speaking it and then the motherfucker behind the till switched to French when speaking to me.
And yeah, the southern half seems poorer, but that's largely because there's a bunch of regions that had huge industries that have gone defunct or have simply run out of resources (such as the mines).
The whole of the Benelux is weird like that though
The southern half of the Netherlands and Flanders fit better together than North+South in either country do. And Luxembourg is just weird all around

Don't forget (Not an excuse for the ones living on the Dutch/Flemish border) that most don't get Dutch in elementary school and compared to the French we get in highschool it's pretty little they get in highschool (unless they changed that in the past years, been a while since I went to school there ).
There are those that have the French mentality, but I never got that trouble. I usually got by with a mix of French and Dutch and than they seem to do more of an effort. There is also a huge majority of Flemish people who don't (want to) speak french.
I do admit I try to make it sound better, because in all honesty: the proportion of blame they get is out of order. Usually it comes from people who can't even speak proper Dutch let alone one of the other two official languages they should speak
