I guess in the general sense I shouldn't bitch about this, at least I have a job, and I actually enjoy working here.

There are only 4 of us at the moment (it's a new firm), we should get more people in the near future. The work I do as a frontend developer has taught me loads about html, css, jquery and some php I never knew before. And that's cool.

But the pay is extremely shitty :\

Officially I get minimum wage which is 2400 kn (€315) plus another 2000 kn (~€260) 'on hands'. We agreed to being reported on minimum wage so that we would help our boss out, since he's starting a new firm and all, but on my interview we agreed on 5500 kn when the firm starts. And I went with that getting a part on hand, because I thought he'd give the remainder so that I get 5500 out in total. But that didn't happen.

All this mixed with the fact that he bought himself new monitors, macbook air (we need to be able to test on apple), new phone, and we do make nice money off of themes on themeforest, makes me feel a bit like an idiot tbh.

I said that I'm not satisfied with low pay, and that in few months it would be nice that I get a raise. And he said that if the new clients come in, then it will be easier to get raise.

On one hand I see that being a new business it's not easy, but on the other I feel like I'm being duped :\

I talked to my friends, and they say that if by June he doesn't offer me a raise (I started in June), I should start looking for a new job. Because at this rate I'll never have enough money to move out of my parents house. I can't save anything on the side with current pay, and I live with my parents! My bf said that I should start really learning more, and that if things don't go as planned here that he'll try to set me up an interview at his firm (he works in one of the biggest firm in Croatia that does applications and web stuff).

:\

Think that's the best course also. I'd seriously hate his guts if i had a spoken salary deal which he didn't uphold. Perhaps find a new place before confronting him, and if shit comes to pass you have somewhere to go.

You can't save anything with 4400kn a month?

Even if you were paying for food and some of the bills you should still have about half left. Assuming you spend half of that on blackjack and hookers, it should leave you with 1000kn every month.

I realise that's not a lot when saving for a place of your own, but that should be a decent start.

If you feel like he should have a chance: go with your plan of waiting it out till June tho I'd look out for other things already. Just to be sure.

What your BF says should already happen tho regardless of him setting up an interview. Invest in yourself and study more/work on the side.

Well currently my costs are:
Transportation - 360 kn (~€47) - not included in salary
Gym - 230 kn (~€30) - not a necessity, but it's a great activity, especially for my back since I'm sitting for 8 hours
Mobile phone - minimum 50kn (~€6.5)

Other than that I was planning on buying a new computer, which could add extra 500kn (~€65) to the bill plus I'm changing my fillings, got 5 of them out, still 4 to go, and each is 250 kn (~€33). Initially I was changing the fillings out of aesthetic reasons, but since my dentist found two cavities underneath the old ones I'm not taking any chances. Plus one filling got chipped yesterday (old one) so that has to be fixed.

These 4 teeth will cost me 1000kn (~€131).

And I buy food for home here and there, not to be a total burden on my parents.

The thing is that I really wouldn't want to live just barely scraping by. And if I were living alone, that's what I'd be doing. I couldn't afford anything, going out to movies once or twice a week, having get togethers with my friends, that kind of stuff. My mom and dad are not helping by pointing out how little I make, considering I have a masters degree in theoretical physics Laughing

The thing that kinda gave me the 'kick in the gut feeling', was that we did have a deal at the beginning and I was kinda counting on that.

I will work the best I can, learn more on my own. Maybe try a bit of freelancing on the side.

Hey dingo,

just out of interest, how much would you (or your company) charge for a relatively simple website for a software product?

It would be similar to this in a way:
http://www.mono-project.com/

There's would be a front page describing the product with images/text and link to download. There would be links to news/documentation & community.

News would just be a fairly standard list of entries (comments aren't needed, but are nice).
Documentation would just be a link likely to a different page that was generated via some tool on my end so you shouldn't need to do much about it.
Community part would need to involve a wiki and a forum set up.

Most important thing is that there has to be a simple CMS that allows me to change this up (e.g. add news, edit the front page and other individual pages). It would be great if it's extensible enough so I can easily add new pages without messing too much with it. Also the design of the page needs to be good. You'd also have to deploy it on my server. Pretty much anything else, i.e. the content can be handled by me.

I'm guessing stuff like WordPress allows me to do this but I haven't explored it and I don't even have the few hours/days it would take me to figure it out so I'm potentially looking for someone to do this for me.

Yeah, designer is one of his best friends, and other colleague is still in uni, and before this job when he finished 3 years of uni, he was unemployed for 9 months (he decided to go to uni when he got the job, since now he can manage paying it). So when he was on the job interview he basically said that he would work for 3000 kn (~400€).

I on the other hand think that my degree actually means something so I said 5500kn.

I see 2 options.
1) Go to work to bf firm
2) If you plan to stay on current job then ask some % of that company - since you do not get paid enough now and later IF that company comes more serious you can sell your share.

Something does not seem right or at least from what I have heard.
I know contract builders who travel to Norway to work for
at least 10€ per hour and supposedly by Norwegian standards that is a very low pay.

Is it because of income tax?

I hope those are weekly wages?

That said, the first 2 years or so you shouldn't really focus on wage, but try to learn the job. Try to find your specialty and improve on that.

Once you have something to show for yourself, you will feel more confident and could start looking for other opportunities. Nobody's indispensable, but you can still make them miss you Wink

Lots of competition in webdevelopment though, which is always bad for wages. There are much more lucrative jobs in IT out there...

There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

There is no point in comparing really. Different cost of living everywhere in the world. In UK minimum wage is 4 times higher, but the cost of living is higher as well.

This pretty much.

I guess I can focus on honing my skills. I started working on my portfolio page, and I plan to turn it to a wordpres portfolio theme. Luckily bf is a graphic designer so he'll help, with a little bit of luck I'll try to sell the theme on themeforest and make some money on the side Smile
