So with my external hard drives dying all over the place, I'm looking for something more durable. While losing 100GB isn't a big deal, these days with 2+TB disks, it's getting a bit painful Very Happy Evil or Very Mad Embarassed Crying or Very sad

I was googling for RAID solutions, and came across this:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/910567-REG/lacie_9000363u_5_bay_5big_nas_pro.html/prm/alsVwDtl

An out of the box NAS/RAID drive array (going up to 30TB!), which seems exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, it's by LaCie, and I have some bad experiences with them in the past (with external hard drives no less).

I'm not too familiar in this area, so don't know if there are better alternatives around. Anyone got recommendations, perhaps?

I know there's a risk with prebuilt nases, but I admit it's the convenience I'm after Laughing
I never built my own one, let alone with raid. My experience is limited to the pc's I put together, and that's been at least 10 years ago Smile

I was looking at the Synology website, as they have a pretty good reputation, and saw this:
https://www.synology.com/nl-nl/products/DS1815+

I guess the trouble will be to find the store that sells it.

Yeah, I caved in and bought a Synology box (the 2413+ one, with 12 bays). My reasoning was, for that price, can I built a nas/raid with 12 hd slots, that is also that silent?
Doubt it, and I wouldn't have it by Wednesday Razz

Price/value wise, it costed me around 100$ per hd bay (not counting actual disks), which is not too expensive, I think.

this thread seems more relevant so i'll just copy what i wrote in another thread.

so i became very interested in this topic. well not exactly NAS, but data backup in general, RAID1 i guess.

it's 2014 and i can no longer accept the thought of losing all data in a 3 or 4TB drive crash so i want to do something about it.

if i were to use pc dedicated to NAS like paxsali, do i have to use linux or windows 7 is ok too? i'm not a big linux guy and don't have time to learn how to set it all up in linux.

i would just buy NAS device but don't like the fact that their prices are really high and for that you get so many limitations, like many hard drives aren't supported etc.

any tips or recommendations are highly welcome.

thanks, looks like the best course of action for me is to re-purpose my current components for NAS when i buy PC upgrade early next year.

So I ordered a Synology NAS, and want to move all my existing hard drives into it. They are not the same models, not even the same size. I wonder what the best configuration is. Eventually I will be probably moving to WD Reds, but the drives that work, I do not want to throw away. Since the drives are currently formatted in NTFS and are all simple volumes, I will not be able to just put them in the NAS, as Synology is able to read just ext4 in internal drives. Now, since one of my old drives is failing anyway, I will be replacing it with my first Red drive, a 4GB. So I will be able to move the data this way, copypasta the old content disk by disk, and then expand the volume in the NAS.

I read about this hybrid RAID, any word on that?

I wonder if JBOD is not the best solution for me, with several different volumes for each disk.

Question, if one of those NASes can be run on windows can I install some player (kmp/pot player) and use that player to stream video to the tv?

I like some functions of those players (3d video/subtitles, moving video above and subtitles below in widescreen movies with top/bottom black bars and so on). Is it even possible? Currently I`m outputting video played via those players by hdmi cable from pc to tv, but I`m looking for something wireless, with support of those players (if possible).

DLNA apps that I`ve tested didnt have subtitles support which is quite pointless lol, and obviously they require PC to be turned on while NAS server doesnt.
