|
 |
Here's the situation -
I've got external HDD's hooked up to my PC where I store/index my shows/movies (typical codecs - mkv, avi, mpg etc.)
My living-room has a large format TV (not a smart TV, just old-school Plasma, 54" or some-such).
I need something that I can plug in to the TV via HDMI, point it to a shared network folder on my external drive hooked up to my PC, and watch movies on the TV. All of this has to be done wirelessly as an ethernet cable/ferrying my external around every time I want to watch something is too much of a hassle.
I have a gigabit router that supports 802.11 b/g/n and broadcasts on 2.4 and 5ghz frequencies so wireless bandwidth won't be an issue, at least from the PC side.
I ran across this , which seems to fit the bill, but people are claiming it has trouble streaming large (4-8gb) mkv files wirelessly.
Has anyone had experience with a similar scenario? What devices do you guys recommend? Any input appreciated.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Few dollars less you can have the Amazon Fire TV, just put plex on it and wallah
http://www.amazon.com/Fire-TV-streaming-media-player/dp/B00CX5P8FC/
It's what I have and I can do 15GB movies with it. It starts to chug a bit at 20GB. Also with it being based off of android, you can run emulators on it as well as plug just about any gamepad into it to have it work with the emulators.
There's also the firestick which should also serve you well. It's dual core vs the fire tv which is quad.

You could also get a Roku
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=roku
Pretty much the same thing but not as good as the Amazon device.
Fire TV supports 5GHz as well. Just remember while 5GHz is faster, the range for it's speeds are closer range than 2.4
The way plex runs, you just run it as a "server" on your system. Point it to your HDD where your movies and shows are. Then once you get the device, install plex, link it to your account, it'll connect to plex then you just use it as if it was Netflix on your own TV.

Chromecast + PLEX (installed on your PC) would work too.

I just bought chromecast couple of days ago and so far it works wonders. With right apps you can use it to stream local content to tv. Very easy solution, but i have read that it has problems with very high bitrate 1080p rips, so far all my rips have worked fine, maybe there are some very high quality rips or 3d ones out there which use very high bitrate. But since chromecast lets you choose the streaming quality i imagine you can use pc to downscale if needed.

Apparently Chromecast + Plex only supports .mp4 videos natively, with all the rest requiring transcoding.

You can't expect too much from a $35 media player. And as such, the Chromecast is built to only work with .mp4 contained videos that are encoded with H.264 video and AAC audio.

I'd like something that plays most codecs/formats.
The Plex forums are awash with problems regarding their Amazon Fire TV plugin, but thusfar it's still looking like the most hassle free option.

As I said earlier, the problems it has aren't really that big a problem at all. I watch my movies and shows on it daily and the most of an issue it has is it picks weird times to refresh the library. It plays everything perfectly.

I'm using a raspberry pi with xbmc, but sometimes it struggles to play 1080p smoothly. Not an issue wih a wired connection though. Would probably use fire tv, but I just love that I can use ambilight with the pi.

I would spent 30 mins laying a cable properly instead of going wireless.
If you had a PS3 laying around you could have used that as a media device and have Mezzmo to run anything on it.
Most media players are fine if you don't want extra fluff.
I made sure to buy a TV with DLNA and that makes everything easier. Just have the TV on my lan and have my pc act as a media server (it's on most of the times anyway) with Mezzmo.

had a playstation 3 for a few months to play gta. it was loud as fuck and i can't imagine watching/streaming something via playstation3 could be fun with that kind of WRRUMMMMMMM noise.
can't u just hook the hdd up on the tv? i did it that way but then again i got a smart tv with all those useless features, don't know if it's possible without all that.
i did it that way so i have timeshift also, otherwise i would had the hdd connected to the router so i can get access from pc/tv/anywhere.

Roku 3 + plex works great for me. I was originally wireless, but then bought my daughter a smart TV a few months later and with her streaming wireless, the picture would lag. So wired connection for me and wireless for her and no problems watching 2 streams at once (assuming your cpu can handle it)
