Unlike the cheaper U2713HM and U2412M, the U2713H and U2413 are the true successors to U2711 and my current U2410.
I read that matte coating will be less aggressive this time, so no (or little) graininess.
There is also a talk of a U3014 coming later this year (2013 ), but I do not see the benefit. It has the same horizontal resolution as the 27", albeit it's a 16:10 so slightly higher vertical resolution. At any rate, pixel size is rather larger, which makes it lower quality actually.

Looks great, and pro too
I have my eyes set on U2412M. Imo a best price/quality I could afford and for what I need.
I'll try to earn some more money on web sites, sell my crappy T220, and buy this

My first Dell. It is just great. dot.
From build quality to display quality everything is top notch.

Ah, but compared to <insert any TN monitor ever made anywhere in the world> it's still brilliant, which is where KC's amazement comes from. Yay for IPS

I wouldn't say trash, it is still an OK quality IPS display. Much better than the usual TN bullcrap people seem to love (they have no clue what color correctness or uniformity means).
But nowhere on the level of the higher tier monitors.

well IPS aren't without problems too. they have way slower response time than TN, still no 120Hz (only a few lousy attempts to overclock Korean displays), and that dreaded IPS glow phenomena which ruins dark games and movies.

That "dreaded IPS glow" is hugely exaggerated and mostly happens on the extremely cheap panels; not to mention that every single 120 Hz monitor out there has fucking terrible backlight bleeding (much worse than the "glow") - I've seen almost all of them in action by now and I wouldn't trade any of them for either of my Eizos or even a 2311/2312. If you want I'll gladly make some photos of my two monitors in pitch black circumstances to show you that fact. Sadly I've already sold my W2253V, so I don't have any TN reference material anymore.
Your point about response time is also nonsense. An IPS panel at 6ms (which is just about any decent one, including the cheap ones found in something like an IPS226V) has roughly the same average response time across the board as a TN panel; TN panels may have the faster GTG at 2ms, but they also have much slower switches between colours that are further apart. Input lag is less than 1 frame at all times, so nothing can be improved there - 0 input lag is not technically possible. The only thing where TN has an advantage is the fact that 120 Hz panels are affordable.

Is any one of those good for gaming?
ViewSonic VX2770Smh
Dell S2740L
ASUS MX279H
They are all 27'', IPS and very affordable, which makes me suspicious.

I'd swear I've seen your older thread recently. (probably from 2009 ) |
I have a U2410. I believe I got it in 2010. But it is time to upgrade, and the U2713H seems like a natural choice. The reason I did not go with a U2711 is because of the aggressive antiglare coating that was too distracting (U2410 also has some but nowhere as aggressive as the larger older models).

Regarding 120Hz, 2ms and all that nonsense. I would rather have a color-correct, large viewing angles (especially on the larger ones). Keep the TN 120Hz crap to the kiddies.

Could not say this better, had 120hz before the U2711... Took like 10 minutes to forget the 120hz overhyped smoothness. Difference in image quality / colors were so big aswell. About the anti glare, it bothered me for like 1 day, but now i cannot see it. I thought i would have been too much for me to handle (readed shitloads of comments about it before buying).

I cannot understand the ppl who are for TN panels Besides the price there is not a single good thing that goes for their advantage :\
I made a magazine for my uni (student's project), and saw from the first hand the giant drawback in TN panel monitor: I was warping a text around a 'white' picture in InDesign, and luckily (!) a pen fell from my desk, so I went to pick it up, and I looked at the screen from down below, only to realize that the picture I was wrapping the text around had a yellow background! And I didn't noticed that when looking right at it!!!
So if the color reproduction doesn't matter to you, then by all means, go for the cheaper TN panel, but if you have a grain of salt in your head, you'll ask around and buy IPS (even cheaper e-IPS are better than the most expensive TN xD)...

what a load of stinking bullshit. 1080p does not look horrible at 27". and it's better for gaming if you can't afford SLI setups required for smooth gaming at 1440p resolution.

Yes it looks, especially after you have seen 1440p. Compared my brothers 1080p 27" to my 27" 1440P and the difference was like on day and night. Single card is enough for smooth gameplay @ 1440p, atleast my overclocked 7970 does nice job (MSAA needs to be turned off on some games, everything else can be maxed out).

nah, it doesn't look horrible. at work i have 27" 1440p, and it's great for work. at home i have 27" 1080p and i like it that way. when i game i like to have monitor further away to see all the screen edges easier, so if i had 27" 1440p at same distance that i have my home 27" 1080p text would just be too small.
i can also be annoying like you and claim that 27" 1440p looks abysmal compared to ipad4's 2048x1536 9.6" retina display, or the new galaxy s4 that will feature 1080p display in 5".

1440p requires sli/crossfire/bigpu if you want all details and AA. I would say DELL monitors are not designed for fast fps or gaming in general but for photo and movies. I got the asus vg278HE and before i had Dell U2713H, i prefer the asus for gaming (144hz, 2ms, good colors if you can make some calibration, btw color reproduction in games are not "the real ones" so who cares )

1440p is a no go for me...I see no point in upgrading my PC to high end now or in the near future.
I'm going to stay in middle class and my 660 TI is supposed to hold out until 2015, which is already a long shot with the 192bit mem bus and next gen consoles around the corner.
The 20-30% loss of performance is not worth the resolution upgrade. (also not worth 120hz and 3d)
I currently still have a 22'' TN Panel which is working flawlessly but its too small and I want to upgrade mainly for size and quality is secondary. The step from 22 to 24 is not enough imo, and 27'' seems to be the biggest possible to still get an adequate pixel density for 1080p.
I'm leaning strongly towards the brand-new ASUS MX279H but reviews are very sparse so far.
One review reports a reaction time of 12ms, causing slight ghosting, some independent sources report backlight bleeding after a few hours.
Which is horrible, because the one I currently use has slight bleeding on top and its absolutely distracting. I want a pitch black picture this time.

MSAA off and problem solved. it gives these days like 100% hit to fps.

Yeah TN suck. People who proclaim '120hz' TN displays are worth it over the color uniformity of IPS are, frankly, inept. These are likely the same people that proclaim because a display has colours that 'pop' and an accurate display does not have colours that 'pop' that the 'popping' display is better. (See most every Android handset and users proclaiming they'd rather have popping colours then sRGB accuracy)
The stupidity of 120hz users is compounded when you realize most of them don't even have the hardware to run games at 120FPS (or even 60 FPS).
And frankly, if i'm playing one of few old school twitchy FPS games that require a *real* refresh rate of 120hz i'd go CRT.

I kid you not, tho, I tilted my head on every page just to be sure what the correct colour of the image was xD
